What is your myth about?

Since gum is designed to be chewed , it is suggested that if swallowed the piece of gum sits in your stomach for approximately seven years before it can be digested.

Which arguments disprove your myth?

Our bodies do not possess digestive enzymes to specifically break down gum base, just like the fiber base of raw vegetables, corn, popcorn kernels, and seeds. However, these do not stay on your stomach for years, gum simply travels the same path as food and is excreted in stool.

Exceptions could include people with gastroparesis, or any condition that causes the buildup of food in the stomach, nevertheless it is highly unlikely for gum to sit in the stomach for seven years.

Although gum is in fact indigestible for humans, it is harmless to the digestive system. A possible motive for the creation of this myth revolves around generations of parents attempting to teach children not to swallow non-food items.

Who is the source of information?

Dr McGreal, Duke Health Clinic´s gastroenterologist.

Do you think is reliable? Why?
The article in which her observations were prublished is validated, and the reviews of her patients seem to be entirely positive. She also provides examples of studies she has done, where even in endoscopies she has performed she has never seen a wad of gum laying in her patients´ stomach. Her degree is also shown in the Duke Health Clinic´s official platform, making it a reliable source.
