Character Trait

I believe a personality trait that represents Rose would be caring. Rose represents these traits because during the play, she is shown to care very much about her son Cory and his well-being. She gets upset when Troy yells at him and scolds him for wanting to play football. Rose has tried to talk with Troy and convince him to let Cory play ball because she cares about Cory's passion and his feelings. A direct quote from the text that supports this is, "Why don’t you let the boy go ahead and play football, Troy? Ain’t no harm in that. He’s just trying to be like you with the sports" (Wilson). Rose says this because she cares about Cory and feels he should be able to enjoy playing ball.

Rose views herself as a loyal, good wife. The reason she views herself this way is because during the play, Rose explains how she gave up everything for Troy to be his wife. She goes into detail, saying she surrendered her dreams and hopes for him and how she stood beside him for all those years. She also explains how the thought of ever wanting to see other men might've crossed her mind, and despite this, she still stayed loyal to Troy.

Troy views Rose as just a housewife and nothing more. The reason Troy views Rose this way is because he cheated on her and explains how he started to feel tired of Rose and standing in the same spot for eighteen years with her. He wanted someone else who could make him laugh, feel good, etc. because Rose wasn't giving him those feelings anymore. Troy then decides to cheat on Rose in hopes of finding someone better.

This painting represents motherhood which relates to Rose deeply. In this painting, we can see a woman taking care of an infant child. The warm colors, such as the reds and oranges, create a sense of belonging and warmth in the painting, which is something we see in Rose throughout the play. This relates to Rose because of how caring she was over Cory and how well she raised him. This also relates to when Rose took in Troy's child from another woman because the baby's mother passed away due to complications. Rose taking in this helpless baby shows how motherly and kind she is, despite the fact the baby was not hers.

Theme and Explanation

An important theme that represents Fences is loyalty. In Fences, loyalty plays a major part in all of the characters relationships. Troy cheated on Rose, proving he is not a loyal person by having a child with another woman. Throughout Rose and Troy's relationship, Rose stayed loyal to Troy, never running off with another man like Troy did with another woman. Rose has even said, stated in the text, "I been standing with you! I been right here with

you, Troy. I got a life too. I gave eighteen years

of my life to stand in the same spot with you.

Don’t you think I ever wanted other things? Don’t

you think I had dreams and hopes? What about my

life? What about me? Don’t you think it ever

crossed my mind to want to know other men? That I

wanted to lay up somewhere and forget about my

responsibilities? That I wanted someone to make

me laugh so I could feel good?" (Wilson). Rose explains here that she stayed loyal to Troy after all these years. And despite the fact that the thought of seeing other men crossed her mind, she never acted upon those thoughts and stayed loyal to Troy. On the other hand, Troy didn't return the same loyalty to Rose and betrayed her which affected their relationship negatively.

This line of lyrics represents feeling alone, sad and trapped, which is how Rose feels after Troy cheats on her. "There is a dream and it sleeps in me" represents how Rose let go of all her hopes, dreams, needs and wants for Troy. "Keeps me awake in the night" represents how upset Rose is about Troy cheating on her and how much this affected her. This song represents Rose greatly when it comes to when Troy cheated on her, the lyrics perfectly explaining how Rose feels after this situation.
