This essay is about a police officer who was in the struggle between pressure from community and humanity. He was already hated by the community so the urge to get the community's approval is emerging. A chance to get acknowledged by them is to change himself for the sake or the community which involved himself in both internal and external conflicts. He struggled in the consideration of self-image and conscience since he was living in the society that obviously he needed to be fitted in. At the end of the story, he gave up upon an helpless elephant's life for the sake of a clear-headed objective.

The fact that he didn't want to killed the elephant at first, shows how thoughtful he is towards animal habitats. But when he killed that elephant anyway, it shows that he is trying to lift himself up among the Burmans because that's what the Burmans want. It is very upsetting too to see that the Burmans didn't even care about the elephant at all but for its meat and tusks and leave it to die.

Orwell, the author tells his experience of shooting an elephant in Moulmein, Burma. Orwell was a colonial policeman in British Burma but he was disliked by the local people. He didn't have the intention to shoot the elephant because of his position as the representative of British laws. The factors that lead to shooting the elephant are because are ravaging the bazaar and the incident and the death of local man who was killed by the elephant. As the crowd gathered, he felt the pressure to shoot the elephant. He realized the elephant was not dangerous as he drew himself near to the elephant, it did not attack him. He pulled a trigger to the elephant three times but three shots were just weakened the elephant and he decided to shoot his two remaining bullets to the heart of the elephant. At that time, he could not stand the elephant dying.

What "Shooting an Elephant" is all about?
It talks about a colonial British police officer who has a conflict with his own British empire and Burmese since he does not have any choice left. He has been hated and disrespected by the local people. The local people are shocked about a raging elephant coming and destroying someone’s bamboo, killing a cow and devouring the stock. And later, he is assigned to kill the elephant because it brings chaos to the crowd. At first, he does not believe of elephant being a wild animal until he sees a dead corpse, an Indian victim and black Dravidian coolie dying horribly with his arms crucified and head sharply twisted to one side. The man is found lying with his body sprawling in the mud.
The British police officer brings a rifle with him with an intention of protecting himself from danger but the crowd of 200 people who has urged him to kill the elephant due to massive destruction. The thing that he does is just following the elephant silently at a metalled road located at the waste of paddy fields. He once realizes that unless he kills the elephant, the Burmese people will laugh at him. This makes him to shoot the elephant that is agonizing its death in suffering. After three shots, the elephant still does not die, until the British police officer fires his remaining shots into his heart and down his throat.
Then, it takes for half one an hour to die

Group 5. 2) The essay is about a white British police officer who lives in Burma who ought to encounter a ravaging elephant when he was in duty. The narrator is disrespected by the Burmese and also against the British empire. While he was on duty, he is in a conflict whether to shoot the elephant or not. Because of the pressure by his surroundings, he shot the elephant to avoid looking like a fool. 3) Major themes a) Dilemma. The narrator originally does not have the intention to shoot the elephant but the unwanted circumstances have lead him to do it. b) Racism. Because of the police officer's origin and race, the natives tend to alienate and disrespect him. 4) We do not like the story because the narrator killed the elephant because of the pressure given by the natives. The act of killing is inhumane. He can make a better decision with a rational mind. 5) a.We must have our own stand and principle in life, not blindly follow other's people opinion to make a decision. b. One must know how to work under pressure in order to have a better outcome.

Group 2

What are major themes?

In ‘Shooting an Elephant’ by George Orwell, one of the major themes is colonialism. The fact that in the beginning of the essay he stated that he is a sub-division police officer in Burma who is hated by the native there shows us that it is related with colonialism that occur in Burma. Orwell tells us his own experience to shoot an elephant who ravaging a bazaar to save his faced by killing it. His acts is considered as cruel as it also delivered a hidden messages about colonialism.

The next theme is conscience. He had no intention of shooting the elephant, but because of the crowd following around, he feels the pressure as the people expected him to kill it, even though he knew that the elephant attack of must was already pacing.

Do you like this essay?

Yes, because the “I” in Shooting an Elephant tries to represent a character that is relatable to a specificgroup of audience which is an individual that lives in foreign country. The struggle of this character to appeal to the society that speaks different language in order to live peacefully without having to live his life through the judgment eyes. This situation is relatable to those students that choose study oversea and would find this struggle is reflected upon their own struggle.

Another reason to find this story to be relatable is when the main character is conflicted between his own morality or principles with people’s expectation of him. Sometimes, to remain likeable within a group or society, some sacrifices are necessary in order to not be alienated by the rest.

Plus, the story is quite interesting because the writer uses elephant to symbolize the rebellion against the british rule. the burmese protests against the elephants’ death just like how they demand for freedom from the rule of British Empire.

What have we learnt from ory

The lesson that we have learned from this story is we have to obey the command of the people who have the higher authority from us. Besides, we should be brave in making any decision. We can see that Orwell is making a right decision by shooting the elephant because it might harm other people in that place.
