I liked that Alan Gratz wrote about the countries he knew about and wanted to share it with children because children don't always get to know about these crises around the world. Alan Gratz sounded very strong about his topics because of the knowledge he knew about and wrote it because of how he felt about and knew about it. I liked that he used interviews with Cuban refugees to understand what was really going on. The author's purpose was to address to people the problems going to people that we need to help. I also like how he gave advice to people who want to be writers.

I love how he stated "Refugees don't have one face, they don't have one religion, they don't have one skin color, and they don't have one point of origin."

After watching the interview with Alan Gratz, something that really captured my attention was the fact that he literally saw a possible refugee raft, THAT WAS STILL IN CONTACT! I mean, the chances of that have to be at least one in a million. Imagine you are about to start writing a book about refugees, and then you see a refugee's raft. Wow. Something I really liked about Alan Gratz is how perseverant he was. He clearly worked a lot on Refugee, and it was clear that many, many, MANY days had been spent only working on writing Refugee. He shows lots of perseverance and is very creative. His mind is able to wander between ideas, and he is able to connect those ideas in astonishing ways.

What surprised me from the interview was how so many northern countries denied jewish people who had to come back to Europe and then hitler invaded the countries that the people moved to. I was also surprised about how someone left their country with only a raft and some other things that would help him or her stay alive.

"She listened now, intently, trying to hear the heartbeat of Cuba in her own music.

What she heard instead was the sound of breaking glass." (Gratz, Page 13) Cuba has become a corrupted society and because of leaving Cuba being banned, she has lost almost all hope. Isabel's father has been arrested for attempting to escape Cuba, and her neighbors the Castillos are building a secret boat to escape Cuba. Before boarding the ship Josef and his mother noticed his father's suspicious activity and it worried them, he was being very secretive and protective. “He looked around manically, like there were spies everywhere. “We have to go. Mahmoud wanted to be invisible and keep a low profile so he could stay under the radar. Unexpected fighter jet missiles were extremely common and so was death. Mahmoud has a brother whose name is Waleed. The war going on in Syria scared Mahmoud but it turned his brother, Waleed, into a robot. Syria had not always been like this though. Just four years ago, Syria had been a bright, happy place with excitement and entertainment. Until 2011, when the Arab Spring came to Syria. Mahmoud and Waleed had kept their heads down and tried to become invisible. Their attempt failed. Mahmoud and Waleed’s house had been striked by a missile. The missiles kept on coming and Mahmoud did everything in his power to protect Waleed. Once Mahmoud was gathered with all his family, his mother had started talking about moving to Germany like they had always planned, except this time, they would have to move quickly in order to survive.

Based on the book, we can infer that Mahmoud is a very kept-to-self and selfless person. We know this because the author said "His

shoulder ached and his chest still seared with every hard, desperate breath, but the only thing that

mattered now was getting to his mother. His sister. His brother.

Mahmoud pulled himself up out of the rubble and saw the building across the street in raw

daylight, like he was standing in midair beside it." this shows that the reader can infer that Mahmoud was barely living but all he could think about was saving and knowing his family was okay. We know that Mahmoud's character is very caring and selfless. This was an indirect characterization the author didn't want to say Mahmoud was selfless he wanted to show the reader he wanted the reader to find out Mahmoud's personality throughout the book.
