Ballet positioning of arms and feet - I've learnt various positions in ballet which have also helped me with my jazz technique and contemporary , I feel that ballet is very important as so much is taken from this for other dance styles and forms. So first i have a picture that shows the positioning of feet -

I have now shown in image arm positions , these are very important as the arms give you stability and great beauty of line. These arm positions can also help with other styles that are taught but also I think learning these positions and being tested on the alignment will improve commercial the most especially if a choreographer teaches a piece of choreography that focuses strongly on arms. The image also below tells you what positions they are .

Ballet has a definite set of body positions, and until you get comfortable with them, they can be a bit uncomfortable.Ballet is done in turned out positions most of the time , where as jazz it's mostly parallel.
• Ballet is more of a classical dance form where as jazz is more a casual and relaxed dance form.

• Ballet originated from France in the 16th and 17th centuries, whereas jazz was originated in the early 20th century in New Orleans USA.

• Ballet is graceful and has a lot more complex steps than jazz has.

• Jazz is based on natural body movements and is more fluid and loose, whereas Ballet is more vibrant.

• The structure and technique of ballet is more complex than jazz dance

• For a casual dancer, it is easier to pick up jazz and have fun , Ballet is much harder and requires a lot more dedication and time as well as your focus .

• Jazz can be slow but also it can be sharp and have sudden movements. However , ballet is poetry in movement being very graceful to a audience or other dancers to watch.

I have been working a lot on my point since starting and can see the improvement already . I regularly now sit on my feet which i found uncomfortable at first but now I don't feel any pain and can do it with ease . I think where I fall down is using my point in leaps as I focus so much on my legs and getting them straight I forget about my feet and this still applies with kicks and other laps and jumps that we do in ballet jazz and contemporary.

Posture is something I sometimes struggle with and is most prominent when I perform ballet. This diagram shows correct posture and how all of the body should be aligned. Out of the pictures I would say my posture at the moment is most similar to D. Upon reviewing this I will now be conscious of my posture at all times.

STRENGHTS IN JAZZ

In jazz i would say one of my strengths is travelling , it is very easy for me to travel as i have long legs but i think what also has helped this is the amount of exercise and travelling that we do in our jazz lessons . I find that if I stand behind someone and they don't travel as much as me then there actually stopping me from my full potential.

another strength I have is performance , I think it is natural to me to perform but with jazz I find it a lot more easier than other technique lessons as every time we do a routine or exercise it always feels like were on stage or performing it to an audience.
