After being given my roles of costume and performer I was excited to get started.

Costume:

I started by liaising with my director and producer on their vision for the characters, we came to the conclusion that we wanted an over-the-top y2k sort of vibe, lots of jewellery and bright colours as it reflects both the youthful energy of the characters and the contemporary setting of when it's set , 2024. We decided to use The Colour Theory in costume design as it uses colours to evoke emotions, highlight character traits, and reinforce the theme or narrative of a production, we found this really helpful to use when brainstorming costumes, helping to shape how the characters are perceived and enhance this storytelling. 

I started by scanning through the script, taking notes of how the script describes each character, associating a colour to their costume using, The Colour Theory:

Mystic Michael- ‘a look of distinct intelligence compared to the rest of the cult’

Orange colours- combination of yellow and red suggests a person who is both intellectually sharp (yellow) and dynamic or assertive (red). It conveys a sense of alertness and insight, which can reflect a character's distinct intelligence

George- Hannah’s Dating app date, ‘an artist to his core, pretentious but with a good heart’  

dark colours, black- he's in a band, punk look, lack is often associated with mystery and the unknown. It can convey that the character is complex and hard to fully understand at first glance (when he stood Hannah up on the first date) which fits well with the idea of someone who's more than just a punk or "edgy" artist. Black makes him seem introspective and enigmatic, adding to the mysterious artist persona.

Hannah- ‘very pretty, very insecure’, singer,

blue and white colours- as this symbolises purity, blue also symbolises loneliness which is how the character feels a lot. On the colour wheel, blue is a cool colour that often symbolising this loneliness, sadness, and emotional distance. This aligns with the character's feeling of insecurity and emotional isolation. Blue is often associated with calmness peace and innocence, but it can also suggest distance or feeling alone, as if the character is surrounded by people but emotionally detached and misunderstood, quite like Hannah.

Butch Kirsty- ‘petite and girly despite her self claimed “Butch” moniker’. Dark colors like deep blues, blacks, and grays are often linked to strength, confidence, and mystery, reflecting the "butch" side of her personality. Even though she’s 'petite and girly', these colors help her project the boldness and assertiveness of the 'butch' that she tells people she is .The contrast between her appearance and the darker, more masculine colours shows the tension between how she sees herself and how others might perceive her.

Morgan & Ryan - Hannah’s BFF, 'leader of cult', Red was an obvious for this one, Red is a colour that demands attention. It symbolises strength, dominance, and control, which makes it perfect for a leader. In the context of a cult, red can signal that this character holds power and has the ability to influence or command others. But also symbolises this danger, blood, anger that's to come. Ryan was described as '22 and unhinged', we wanted to also put him in red due to his obsession with blood, and also the fact that him being in a cult is also him supporting this danger.

Young Lovers- 'young bubbly couple'- Pink is often associated with gentleness, love, and affection. It reflects the sweetness of their relationship, emphasising their innocent, joyful bond. Pink suggests that they are in the early, carefree stages of love, where everything feels light and fun.

Budget For Costume - £60

• During this week, we took measurements of cast, got in touch with the costume department at New Adelphi, and created the final costume list.

• We felt it was important to save the budget and look through the costume cupboard and things we already had, before spending money.

• We decided to use blonde wigs for the cult members in the theatre scene when the camera looks to the auditorium, enhancing the cult's obsession with Hannah and how much they idolise her. Luckily the Costume Department provided all of these.

• We created a costume character list word doc so the costume can be easily added in the call sheets.

Performer:

I started by asking myself; what do I want to portray with this character? What makes her butch? How shall I portray this?

This helped me to start drafting a character portfolio for my Kristy:

Kristy is strong, tough, and keeps to herself. A 20 year old woman with a muscular build, a serious look, and moves with confidence. Her style is girly but keeps a butch appearance with her chains around her neck and dark colours. This bit of jewellery also shows her softer side, her girly side. She's not big on showing emotions, but she's fiercely loyal and protective, especially to Hannah. She’s independent and direct, and while she doesn’t open up much, she cares deeply about the people she trusts.

This week, I met with the directors to discuss their vision and how they wanted it to come to life. Since my character had limited dialogue, it was crucial to bring her to life through body language and facial expressions and emphasis on words.

• She's Butch, hangs around with the boys, dark mysterious, conveyed through her makeup (deep eyeliner)

•   Showing her feminine side, she wears lots of jewellery and keeps her voice girly.

•   Loves Hannah, obsessed with her but also cares deeply about her, shown through her concerned face in the theatre scene when she is arguing with Morgan.

  
  

  We finished the week by doing a run through of lines, this helped me see what the director has in mind for my character and they liked the way I present Kirsty :) This week made me feel prepared and ready for filming.

Costume:

We started by shooting in Morgan's house this week, so we decided to keep costume simple incorporating loungewear for both characters.

Morgan: Slightly dirty coloured top to convey his 'slightly sweaty' appearance, Nike tracksuit bottoms and Iceland Jacket as he's just come back from work.

Hannah: Oversized off the shoulder top (to show hickey) and pyjama bottoms, comfy vibes.

• Makeup was also very easy to keep simple.

• Morgan’s red coloured jacket was picked to foreshadow this danger thatHannah is in.

-              S14: Peter Johnson Theatre, Backstage, Hallway

Costume:

Hannah- Black Boots, Mini Skirt and Simple Top, Necklace (statement Necklace with sharp sides- foreshadow the use of using it as a weapon) She’s a cool singer so this outfit really portrays her cool nature.

Morgan- Tuxedo Top, Robe (He made an effort to see his best friend’s gig and therefore wants to dress up, evoking his over-the-top nature)

Morgan’s house, Hannah’s bedroom at Night, Cult scene (S5):

• Cult members described as ‘a group of figures dressed in black robes’, found 8 Dark brown robes in the costume cupboard that we thought were perfect for these cult members! Big hood to drown out their face and accentuate this mysteriousness that’s wanted at the start of the scene.

• Jewellery played a crucial role as I still wanted to emphasise the theme of trendy Y2K, where younger generations engage with adult concepts—like cults—without fully understanding them. This tension between innocence and darkness is central to the piece, especially in the final theatre scene where everything goes terribly wrong. To highlight this contrast, I dressed the cult members in bold, statement necklaces, which are a hallmark of Y2K fashion. These accessories serve as a metaphor for how the characters, though exploring adult themes, are still very many children at heart. The vibrant colours in their jewellery further underline this youthful, almost naive, approach to such serious matters. Essentially, the cult members represent a 2025 generation, where fashion, youth culture, and adult responsibilities collide in often disorienting ways.

•  Mystic Michael’s name carried strong connotations of spiritual and mystical powers, portraying him as a leader, he’s described as ‘distinct intelligence, compared to the rest’ , who taps into a deeper, more spiritual understanding of the world. We wanted his outfit to reflect this by using bright colors and over-the-top elements, such as the wizard hat and orange shirt sparkly shirt, emphasizing that he has fully embraced his role as a cult leader. The exaggerated style served to highlight his immersion in this character, almost as if he’s taken on the identity entirely.

•  Kirsty’s style blends a butch vibe with a hint of femininity. Under her cloak, she wears a green long-sleeve shirt with black prints, paired with bold eyeliner. While her accessories bring in a girly touch, her overall look is more alternative, reflecting the "butchness" she’s trying to channel.

• Ryan's style we wanted to incorporate the colour of red too to link back to his obsession with blood, lots of jewellery.

• Morgan is a serious character and is more serious about this cult than anyone, the obsession for Hannah stems from his so I wanted to make this prevalent in his tuxedo outfit, again very over-the-top.

Theatre- The Cult Final Performance Costume.

We wanted these cult costume to look an exaggerated version of what they were wearing in the bedroom scenes.

Ryan- Sparkley Red Top- Obsession with Blood

Michael- Orange Vest, Dazzled Waist Coat ‘Sexy Necklace”, Flipped to the Inside of the Cloak where it’s sparkling green, exaggerated version of the cults in Morgan's House.

Morgan- Tux Top (with Blood), Chinos, Smart Shoes.

Kirsty- Black and white graphic dress (Butch), Grey Boots, Eyeliner.

George- Tied up in a plaid shirt, boots and skinny jeans, conveying a singer look, band member vibes!

Performer:

To fully understand Kristy's situation leading up to this scene. I had to ask myself: how does she feel at this moment? What events or emotions from her past have shaped her mindset and behaviour here? By exploring the given circumstances and dissecting the scene into units and objectives, helped me evoke the key ideas of how I wanted to portray Kristy and her butch/ girly-ness. She was concerned and upset when she sees her friends fighting in front of her, caught between her love for her friends and the realization that things have escalated beyond what she expected, especially with Morgan getting stabbed. Her shock is compounded by her growing awareness of the cult’s danger, and her emotional conflict is heightened by her own identity struggle balancing her butch side with vulnerability. I think my facial expressions were effective when showing this, she loves them both so much and didn't realise how far this cult would go! Kristy doesn't like the outcome of Morgan getting stabbed and so it was important for my body language and facial expressions to show this.

Looking back on this process I wish I exaggerated this 'butchness' more into my performance, this would have been effective by adopting a confident, grounded posture. Stand tall with your shoulders back and chest slightly forward. This communicates a sense of strength and assurance. I incorporated a neutral/ serious expression in the scene in Morgan's house which I hope also communicated a sense of mystery and authority, by keep the face strong and composed, with a minimal emotional display. However, I wish I occupied the space confidently. Butch characters often exude a quiet dominance by taking up space with ease. This could mean incorporating a wider stance, I feel that the limited dialogue in this performance made it challenging for me to fully express and develop my character.

Old Pint Pot Location:

Hannah- White Dress, ‘gorgeous dress’,- symbolising innocence, not knowing her fate. Added a sparkly red bag, I thought this would contrast this innocence with danger, keeping it subtle but detailed, added silver pumps.

• Young Lover 1: Pink Dress, Pink neck tie, pink headband, young and in love, pink symbolises this in love and cuteness of the character that worked well.

• Young Lover 2: Pink shirt with knit vest, match vibe of his date.

Morgan’s House, Living Room: 28^th November

• Hannah- Jeans and a White Top- getting ready to go to a gig but in a chill look, very casual as going to gigs as a musician would be a daily thing for Hannah.

• Morgan- Red Top, Joggers (Theme of Danger)

George’s flat:

• Hannah- We managed to get 2 copies of the same dress which really worked well for this performance, as we were thinking of reshoots incase the production team needed any reshoots of the date before Hannah's White dress got muddy.

• George- Black hoodie, green top and cargos. (Cosy Vibes as he’s just in his flat)

Wasn't needed as a performer this week.
