Why female athletes should get equal pay by Hannah Jackson

Gender pay gap in sports is the persistence of unequal pay in sports, particularly for female athletes who do not receive equal revenue compared to Male athletes, which differs depending on the sport, according to the research conducted by the British Broadcasting Corp. , "a total of 83% of sports now reward men and women equally". However, it does not mean that the wage gap in sports has narrowed or disappeared. In 2018, Forbes released the list of the top 100 highest-paid athletes, all of them being male athletes. A similar situation also occurred in 2017, when there was only one female athlete, Serena Williams who joined the list and ranked No.56. Billie Jean King brought awareness to the issue of unequal pay in the early 1970s when she was awarded $2,900 less than her male counterpart at the Italian Open. The timeline of the gender pay gap in sports displays the significant events that have occurred since the 1970s. At this point, this issue has been going on for a couple of decades. If females put the work in and more then they should be paid the same or more. Also, if you are going to say people pay attention to male sports because they perform better is a lie because the US Womens soccer team won the 2015 World Cup and the Men's Team has never won it, they haven't passed the quarterfinals in 90 years. Male sports are more known because women in the 1900s were forced to stay in the house, watch kids, and take care of the household. We couldn’t even vote or have a choice of wanting to go to the military or something else outside of the household chores.

How huge the Pay gap actually is.

For example, in professional soccer, the highest-paid male soccer player in the world was Cristiano Ronaldo with 88 million including sponsorships and endorsements. The highest-paid female soccer player was Alex Morgan with 2.8 million. this is only one example, and this issue isn't going to be resolved soon with female athletes still struggling through to make it ahead in a 145-billion-dollar industry governed by men. Even in other countries Australia and the UK have groups that fund a female rights program for direct roles in sports like men called Women on Boards. The sports with the biggest gender pay gaps are Football, Cricket, Golf, and Basketball.

Commercialization of sports and issues

Commercialization is one of the factors adding to the gender pay gap in sports. In tennis, athletes who participate in Grand Slams pay the same prize money to champions who are Males and Females, but the top male tennis players are getting paid more in sponsorships and endorsements. Some criticism female athletes get about playing their sports is that it's not as "physical" as male sports and not as good to watch. This isn't fair to women's sports teams when being told as a little girl who wanted to play football no it's "too dangerous". If we can't play like men, then how is it fair to limit us in the same aspects of the same sports? You can't tell girls it's too dangerous without letting them try or have the option to say no and then limit their paychecks because women's sports were made to be less physical so we could play but in reality, half of women athletes: set higher standards, achieve higher in their sports such as Serena Williams, A'ja Wilson, and someone start the way for women athletes Rhonda Rousey and Holly Home, and attract more fans and give little girls hope that they too can be in their shoes when they get older. I think the world puts limits on female athletes and then again female athletes are the ones going through the hardest of challenges and still coming out on top in their sports, and the hardest working people in the world even from my experiences I wrestled boys who were 210-215lbs and I only was 188-191lbs and I still had one of the best records on my team. To finish, it's also weird men know they are stronger than women but yet still try to compete with them, which makes no sense.

If Roles were reversed

Claire Braund said "Had our culture been used to seeing women, rather than men, play football and rugby for generations, we would find the idea of men playing these games a bit novel. It’s all a matter of perspective." This isn't only in sports even with politics, people in power, law enforcement, and more. Why are women only subjected to being teachers, nurses, caretakers, moms, vets, dentists, and more? When coaching is the same as teaching but with athletes. Why does the world look at women and think we can only do one thing? No one has ever just wanted a balance between all genders, races, and everyday life between people and different work Fields. if the world works when everyone plays a role, why are the same people playing the same roles when over time it's showing it's not working? In My opinion, Men have control in power (presidents, coaches, politicians, BUSINESS, MONEY, AND AUTHORITY) too much in the world without having to have a woman present. men are better than women in certain areas of the world but not everything in the world.

How after 50 years of Battle of the Sexes, gender equity in tennis remains elusive

A 19-year-old Tennis Player Coco Gauff received the same amount of prize money as Djokovic who was the only one to win. Billie Jean King has fought to keep this system in place since 1973 marking 50 years in the making, and in that same year, she founded the (WTA). Venus Williams, who fought for equal pay at Wimbledon and the French Open, said in a ceremony honoring Billie King. "Thank you for having that courage to get everyone in the right direction ... I can't imagine what that was like, but you did it. You did it well. You remained a champion throughout it, and a role model to this day". What started this is when Billie King won a historic battle of sexes in a tennis match against Bobby Riggs, she won 3 sets to 0(6:4,6:3,6:3) at Houston Astrodome with 90 million people in attendance, during this time people thought nothing of this win but she took a stand and non wavered from it in the past 50 years. Women from all over can come together and fight for what is right in the world even if it means going in a male-dominated organization/ or sports. Whether it's in the 1970s 2000s or in the right Nows Women deserve to get equal pay or more for their work and complications over this long period of time, since the start of sports.

The lack of Women

A written report ahead of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and a follow-up on a 2014 study, shows that while the number of women in Olympic sports is growing steadily, female representation on elite Olympic governing bodies is at below 30%. This is another reason for the persistently wide gender pay gap in sports. In sports leadership, it's mostly run by men and made to treat women like men. Women want to be treated the same but recognized differently because we aren't men. We want to be able to have the same choices men do. Not every woman wants to be in a sports team but we don't know unless we have the option. Only eight countries (Malawi, Australia, Bermuda, Norway, New Zealand, Kiribati, Samoa, and Tuvalu) had more than 40% of women on their national Olympic boards and committees. The US had 31.3%, while the UK had 26.7%. Men want to show and prove they are better equipped for jobs but aren't for sure because they only put so little of a woman's perspective in a position of power and are scared to do so. the world is run by men to protect men mostly women have to show or prove what they are going through and what they are saying is right. Women in this day and age are scared of men period because of their power already and give them an important place in power they are untouchable. All of the odds are stacked against women and we constantly have to fight to break them and push through them for what we just want to do what we love while getting what we deserve at the same time. If we can only get a certain amount of earnings so should men and the rest be given back to the US people no celebs everyday people, charities, neighborhoods, schools, project homes, or slumbs. My name is Hannah Jackson and this is my social research project.
