OneNote as an LMS by Niki Mehta

I have used OneNote as a content management tool and it definitely has some advantages. It’s binder-like interface can make it easy for students to organize their class notes. Teachers can view and edit student binders and also “push” content to all student binders in the class. Students can annotate the notes directly in their OneNote binders. They can type and also digitally “write” on the pages (a feature that is very helpful for Math teachers). Teachers can also insert rubrics and other forms of feedback directly into the student’s binder.

In this video, I liked how the teacher was able to insert videos and graphics directly in OneNote. The use of check-lists for assessment and success criteria was also great.

What I don’t like about OneNote is that it looks too much like the traditional binder, with very little room for the teacher to have control over the appearance of the online course. Another LMS is still required. For instance, the teacher would still need to use 3rd party apps to facilitate class discussion, interactive activities, polls, games, etc. A grade management/reporting system would also be required.

The instructor seems to have made the entire course in OneNote with little application of Edsby.

I liked the clear learning goals and the checklists. It gave valuable opportunities for both self-reflection and peer feedback. The content links on the right make simplifies navigation. The materials seem to be great for the course with a variety of activities.

I found the OneNote interface to be somewhat clunky, especially with the embedded documents. Maybe it's just me, but from a design sense, I found the variety of styles and fonts to be inconsistent. Some of the small supporting images made the layout look too busy and were probably unnecessary in many cases. I wonder if any research has been done on how the visual design of content (and the LMS itself) affects student engagement?

I would have liked to have seen more differentiation of activities, especially to challenge students with a deeper interest in Photography.

Overall, it is impressive how much detail and thought has gone into putting this together.

Teacher organization is excellent with the sidebar menu and tabs able to show students where materials live and present things in a generally uncluttered manner. Thought the use of having that "private space" for a buddy for learning is an wonderful way to bring about a community in e-learning; this is something that I may incorporate into my own design. I'm curious if these students are buddied up for the whole course or if there's a rotation - a nice way to learn who your e-classmates are.

OneNote strikes me as being a bit too Web 2.0 - designed with a 2005 mentality about what online discourse should look and feel like. Times New Roman everywhere, small text for links/menus, and primary colours. I'm working with the LMS at the moment which replicates this similar style and feel and find students want to spend as little time as possible interacting in the space.

I have found OneNote to be a great tool for online and in-person lessons. I have found that navigating classroom hardware is a challenge at times and have decided to move my SmartBoard lessons to OneNote. Instead of creating the lesson on the board, I write on my tablet and project the lessons on the board for students. Also, our LMS (Schoology) at our school has a plug-in that allows me to link the classroom OneNote for students into their Schoology account. I have just started this add-on for our Gr 10 Math class, but students have appreciated the new method of teaching. Today's sample have provided me with a plentiful of functions for OneNote that I look forward to incorporating into the courses I teach.

However, I did not like the online classroom layout in today's Sample. I found the layout to be messy and overwhelming to organize the classroom info. I would have preferred a systematic approach to organize the classroom materials and lessons for the course.

How could you better organize information for your class on OneNote?

~J.

Appreciate the inclusion of Overall Expectations so that students are able to understand direct connection of lesson material to them.
In terms of One note- I am unfamiliar with this platform and it looks somewhat complicated to create. Did you find this to be an easy platform to create content on?
