Il prelato, in disaccordo con il re, andò in Francia in esilio ma, su invito del re, decise di tornare dato che il sovrano temeva un accordo con il pontefice Alessandro III contro il Plantageneto. Rientrato nella cattedrale di Canterbury, fu ucciso da Ugo di Morville, William de Tracy, Reginald Fitz Urse e Richard Le Breton.
