An example: Around the 16th Century in England, commoners were more concerned with how to communicate as compared to writing - even prestigious higher class men, when writing papers or essays, for example. There were many different variations of spelling one word; every person came up with their own spelling as to how the word sounded to them instead of coming up with a set spelling. Spoken word was more richly developed; with slang pertinent to certain groups of people and some spoken words known only to particular social classes. The official development of the written words (e.g. the dictionary, set ways to spell it) did not happen until much later. Considering Spoken Language is more apposite to everyday life compared to Written Language, even historically, how is Written Language more important?
