Synopsis:
George is a novel about a transgender girl named Melissa who feels that she is a girl but the rest of the world views her as George, a boy. This novel follows Melissa's journey coming out as transgender when she decides she wants to try out for the roll of Charlotte in her school's production of Charlotte's Web.

Social Justice Theme:
The theme within this anchor text is gender identity. This text will help students understand what gender identity is, what gender roles are, why gender identity is important, and how different genders are treated.

Synopsis:
The International Bill of Gender Rights explains that all human beings should have 10 civil rights regardless of their gender identity and gender expression.

Classroom Use:
Students will learn more about the rights people with various genders identities and gender expressions are entitled to. Students will be grouped into small groups of 2-3 people and assigned one section of the bill of rights. Students will be given the option to create a poster or a PowerPoint explaining their section of the bill of rights, how it benefits cis-gendered people, how it benefits gender fluid people, if there is any discrimination within the bill, and why the section is an important part o the bill of gender rights.

This text follows 2 male penguins named Roy and Silo that live in the Central Park Zoo. Roy and Silo hatch an egg that was given to them by the zookeeper and that completes their family. The zookeeper names their baby Tango because "it takes two to make a Tango."

Classroom Use:
This text will be used to introduce both gender identity and sexual identity. This text will lead to a classroom discussion. The discussion questions will include "What makes Roy and Silo different from the other penguin couples?", "When do Roy and Silo notice they are different?", "Like Roy and Silo, some human couples are both men or both women. Does it matter if both parents are men or women? Why or why not?".

As a whole class we will fill out an anchor chart and make up our own definitions of the terminology "gender identity", "gender expression", "cis-gender", "transgender", and "genderfluid". We will rewatch pieces of the video as we define the terminology. We will also have a group discussion to further understand and use the different terms.

This text will be used to summarize the unit and reflect on all that we have learned.

Synopsis:
This text is about a person named Bailey who dreams about wearing beautiful dresses but is told he cannot wear dresses by his family because he is a boy. Bailey struggles with his identity until he meets a girl named Laurel who encourages Bailey to wear dresses and be exactly who he wants to be!

Classroom Use:
This text will be used to help the students further understand the terminology we previously learned and critically think about why we have "norms" within our society. After reading the text aloud we will have a class discussion about how Bailey's family felt about his gender identity and gender expression as well as how Bailey's family's reactions affected Bailey's feelings and actions. After the discussion we will further discuss stereotypes and create a Venn diagram of the stereotypes of what clothing boys wear, what clothing girls wear, and what clothing both boys and girls wear.
