Step 1: SURVEY

Survey the chapter before you read it. This will give you a general idea of what the chapter is about and the main points that the author will be making.

Go through the chapter and glance at the headings to get an idea of topics/subtopics

Read the final paragraph or summary section of the chapter

Step 2: QUESTION

Before you begin to read the first section, turn the heading of that section into a question. Then read to answer the question that you generated. By formulating questions, you are forced to think about what you are reading and it helps you try to predict what the author's main point will be.

Step 3: READ

Read the text material under the heading in order to find the answer to the question you generated. Use your active reading skills and get more involved with the text

Step 4: RECITE

At the end of the first heading section answer the question that you formulated. Recite this answer in your own words without looking at the text. Jot down a brief answer on a piece of paper.

Step 5: RECORD

Take notes from the reading. After having read a section and reflected on what you have read by answering the question you generated, you should take notes on what you think are the most important parts of the section. Go back over the paragraphs and highlight or underline the main ideas and supporting details. But be sure to highlight/underline no more than 10-15% of a page.

Step 6: REVIEW

After you have finished reading the entire chapter and taking notes, look over the notes doing continual review each day. This ensures you learn the material through repeated interaction and you better prepare youself for tests by not cramming the night before.
