Mao had three main goals;
* A better life for the poor
* To restore China's power
* Development in their economy.

Mao had many challenges to face if he wanted to have these three main goals. People needed to be fed, clothed, housed, and educated. Farming and industries were interrupted. The amount of land they got was very little too.
The Communists wanted the government in control of everything. Which meant the means of production.

What China did with farms is that they would force peasants pool lands with tools and labor to create collective farms. The peasants would farm for the government and give their crops to the govt. so they can sell it and or trade it. Peasants would also get their fair share of their crops so they can feed their family. Most of the time, its not enough food to feed the whole family.

The Great Leap Forward was when Mao wanted China to become more modern like. So the govt. would assign different people jobs but farming. That made their food storage become really low. They also had droughts and other things that happened.
