Yaneks and his family live in Krakow, Poland. But in just a blink of an eye, their city was invaded by the Germans beginning WWII. For now, yanek and his family remain in Krakow. for a little while they stay in their flat with several other families. Anti-Semitic rules have been put away any right they had over time, walls are built up around the ghetto to contain the remaining Jews who have not been taken for resettlement or deportation yet. one-by-one many Jews were relocated to other Jewish ghettos work camp concentration camps or were killed on site.

With stress of no food and constant hiding yanek is living in fear of being caught be the Nazis his emotional state is one of constant terror and panic at what await him at every turn the unknown aspects of the was leave a feeling of being unsettled yaneks early life as a 10 year old boy before the at was very normal he attended school played with friends and went to the synagogue with his family he loves his mom and dad and look up top them but as the war continues yakeks begins to doubt his fathers consent hopefulness and positivist and wonders who is really right his father or uncle Moshe " I still worried he was wrong but fresh bread made me forget all my troubles for a little while at least pg. 25 ' doubting your parents for the first time is a struggle for yakeks especially in was tron Poland

" we cannot let these monsters tear us from the pages of the world" this means that you cant go and turn your self in to the Nazi if you are still alive . uncle Moshe said that to yanek because yanek was scared about what was happening to hi m his parents were killed all of his family except for his uncle Moshe we was took from his work so he could work for the camp instead uncle Moshe said that he was safer working outside of the camp and not there were people at dying right in front of him for no reason at all .

yanek is at his lowest point becuse he thinks he is going to die and is begging to died until water not gas comes out and he relist that he is alive so be becomes more clean and wants to be alive and survive he starts to go to the back of the line for food to get the heavy pieces of food . later in the night a 13 year old boy in celebrating his bar mitsa and yanek joins in and after he gives the boy advise about how is uncle moshe said not to let the Nazis pull you from the pages of the earth .

when yanek is about to die from the gas he starts to think about his life and how he feels and how he deserves to die and is happy too but with he don't we relises that he is still alive and him perspective changes he knows he is alive and keeps repeating I am alive he tells him self that he will try his hardest to stay alive by keeping clean and eating when he can and now he will survive

yanek could feel the heat of the bombs they are slowly getting closer the ground was shaking and he was working all day he didn't do anything about it just sat there a felt the heat knowing they were close and getting closer

yanek was walking for 10 day in the cold with barely any food to eat once he got to the camp he noticed something different about it they gave him warm food soup with meat in it and war bread for them to eat .

after yanek and all of the other prisoners are shipped to the new camp the commanded looks at them and separates them into two groups one with the better looking ones. one with the one who look like that are about to die. when in is yaneks turn he trys to look healthy and strong . then he saw that the prisoner that were picked were held down with a gun the commander said they will not work for a week so they can get there strength back .

because they needed more workers the stop at a train station to get new Jews and they had bags of luggage but they didn't know it won't be taken away from them he trys to tell the new Jews to lie about there age so they could work but they don't listen because they are sacred of him so they don't yanek lies too and he gets put to work .

we yakek gets to Buchenwald he sees the other prisoners and they all look terrified like there is someone with a gun in front of them . after the introduce him to the zoo that entertains the guards yanek wonders if the people thing that the prisoners are animals too. the prisoners get treated worse than the animals the ss get in trouble for hurting the animals but rewarded if the hurt a Jew or prisoner

yanek finally got to the last camp after walking on the cold ground he sees piles of dead people on the side of the road when he walking while he is walking through Czechoslovakia he notices the Czech people put bread of the the window for the prisoners to take . this helped yanek realize that there are still pole in the world that are good and arent like the Nazis.
