In the text that we read in class, it states that "majority of ELLs were in school district that failed to meet the target (NCLB academic achievement targets)," this is evident in the video as some of the teachers mentioned how it was challenging to provide the needs of the students in learning because there weren't many ESL certified teacher.

Another information learned from content is that ELLs tend to get segregated. I saw in the video that the children, because of their varied levels of their English language, are separated from participating in class and they have their small group. Even though this is to meet their need, how do you ensure that these children get access that they are to receive like all other children).

English has words that have multiple meanings and in the video, I saw that the teacher chose a book that is relevant, in some way, to the students' experience. In this way, it not only help the student learn the words and understand the story better but also opens up their related stories and allow the students to share it, which create meaningful learning experience.

1.) One of the things I noticed in the video was how the teachers used different cultural books, so the students could relate to them. This is connected to the demographics shown in class over the statistics of high immigrant populations.

2.) When I saw one of the teachers speak the same language as the students, she was able to reach the newcomers by using their native language. We saw how important languages come into play within education and how important it is to be linguistically diverse.

3.) Finally, I saw the teacher also build a foundation with the student, which created an opening for a relationship. We saw in class how family income plays a part of their education, so this is important because a relationship with the students allows us to stay informed about what they are experiencing and how it affects their learning.

I learned more about the mental health side of ENL students and how it is important to provide any support they may need. It is important to hear the students out and make sure to provide support like counseling and a safe environment for the students.

Having things that the students can connect to allows them to talk about their experiences which creates a safe environment for them. I liked how the teacher provided books for them that allowed them to express their experiences and relate to each other and the book. Having that connection helps the students mental health and understand things they are learning about. Also using native language is good for the students so that the newcomers feel more comfortable with the teacher and allows them to adjust better. (personal connections is key)

Doing more things like hands on activities helps the student transition and learn better. These things don't necessarily need language. (environment matters)

1. Something I learned from watching the video is that it is not only hard on the students, but also on the teachers. Teaching new incomers about reading and writing English when it is also new to the teachers is "not a piece of cake." I think something interesting said in the video was " it takes a teacher trained in trauma and culture to lead conversion with students to open up and see what their life back home is really like."

Native language is the best way to reach new incomer students. - Switching back and forth from the student's native language to English is a skill that helps them. As the teacher says in the video, you do not fight the research; instead, use whatever works to help the student succeed in any way possible. With that, most schools have more culture than others, and it's important to know each culture/religion and to openly accept and acknowledge whichever culture/religion students bring to the school. Calm, safe environment matters for kids.

The teachers at this school really implemented the importance of emotional well-being as well as academic growth and importance. ENL students often come with trauma or stress from migration, so having the social emotional learning teaching strategy present in the classroom is highly important when teaching ENL.

The video really shows how schools foster a sense of belonging through bilingual staff, peer support systems, and family engagement. This strategy gives ENL students an oppurtunity to practice English in real-world, supportive contexts.

The use of culturally relevant material in this video reflect students' backgrounds. This helps english learners feel seen making it easier for them to be engaged in the content.

One thing I learned from the video is that creating a welcoming environment for any student but especially new students is very important to their success. In the video it showed that when schools were welcoming and supportive to immigrant students they felt a sense of safety. They also felt more accepted which will help them grow socially and academically. Without having that sense of trust it will be harder for them to fully focus on learning or feel comfortable in school.

Another thing I learned is that culturally responsive teaching strengthens engagement. It is very important to incorporate students home languages, traditions, and cultural experiences into lessons. This will make the learning more meaningful to the student. This will also help to show them to view their culture as an asset rather than as a barrier. We want students to develop pride in who they are and be more confident.

Lastly I learned that working with people beyond the classroom can help provide support. The video highlights how schools and families work very closely with community organizations to not only help academically but their social, emotional, and mental health needs as well. Families having these tools will help them achieve all kinds of success.

The 3 key facts that I have learned from this is that I realized that the teachers really care about how the students feel after going through a lot. These teachers did anything to help students feel comftorable in learning english. Its so important that teachers find ways to help students understand better when learning a new language. I think its really cool that they do that.

I really learned that its important to learn about each students background and where they come from first to help build connection and trust. Students can feel like they belong in classrooms and also feel comfortable with everyone around them.

I also seen that there are program services that help students become more successful. Students with stress and trauma can get the help they need. Every student will need support and these services will help them.
