Mass Hysteria-

The Crucible explores how mass hysteria can devastate a community. Hysteria is most clearly seen in the villagers' irrational acceptance of the girls’ fabricated claims of witchcraft. One specific example of hysteria occurs in Act III when the girls, led by Abigail, accuse Mary Warren of witchcraft to prevent her from testifying against them. Though multiple people (including Mary) have claimed that the witchcraft accusations are false, the court refuses to be swayed.

Hysteria was a major factor in the many accusations of witchcraft that occurred throughout The Crucible. It helps to understand what hysteria is--an overwhelming fear and excitement that overrides all logic, and is often enhanced and intensified by the presence of others who are acting out on that fear.

The townspeople become hysterical with fear and therefore blinding accept the girls claims of witchcraft.
The townspeople also look for evidence where there is none, spectral evidence, such as when Sarah Good is muttering under her breath and they accuse her of muttering to the devil. When she denies this by saying that she was reciting her commandments, they ask her to repeat all 10 of them. When she cannot it is taken to be the absolute truth that she is
talking to the devil.
This evidence is circumstantial at best but because Hysteria had set in all the townspeople took it as truth because they were scared for themselves

Some citizens of Salem use the charge of witchcraft wilfully and for personal gain, but most are genuinely overcome by the town's collective hysteria, they believe the devil is attacking Salem. And if the devil is attacking your town, then ensuring that your neighbour is punished for doing something cruel to you in the past, becomes a religious necessity, and proves that you're not a witch or conniving with the devil. On a similar note, in Year of Wonders, once the plague begins to tear through the village, the townsfolk straight away attempt to find a scapegoat or supernatural reason for why the deaths are occurring. During this search however,
