The Great Migration refers to the millions of African Americans who, starting in 1910, moved from the suppression of the south into northern and western states. This built the groundwork for cultural shifts in states/cities that saw an increasing African American population. This move allowed them more opportunity (higher wages, varied jobs, education, etc.,) and allowed them to be more active in society and culture.

From the end of WWI to the Great Depression, the Harlem Renaissance was a cultural and ideological movement that celebrated African American identity, culture, art, music, writing, etc... It also gave voice social and political issues that affected African Americans; it pushed back against social and political inequality, discrimination, and violence. This movement was very influential to African Americans because it created a foundation for the later Civil Right movement and revitalized their culture.

Tensions grew as white Americans began blaming Eastern European and Latin American immigrants for the changes in the country. Moreover, tensions were growing between protestants and Catholics. Eventually, these minority groups immigrating to the United States influenced anxieties and led to the Emergency Immigration Act. The act would put legal quotas on how many people from each country could enter America.
