Alfie Knights, a nine-year old Irish boy, wrote a letter to the Secretary of State, Lord Kitchener, asking if he could join the army and help the front line. Lord Kitchener answered Alfie saying he was way too young to enlist, but thanked for the effort. This caused such a big effect on the population that within a week, half a million men had volunteered to go to war. In other cases, boys of Alfie's age and older managed to enlist for the army by lying about their age because of how much they wished to serve their country.

This is one essay out of 150 essays written by German children during World War I, describing their experiences with the war. In "The Warrior's Farewell" this children is describing other kids saying goodbye to their fathers and how they know coming back might not be a option but the soldiers hope that God is watching over them.He defends his country, saying that Germany did not start this war, and England wants to destroy Germany's empire.
This shows the nationalist feeling among the children during that time, and how they viewed their enemies.

"On the Niederwald monument is a picture, which represents the warrior goodbye. We see beer, as the husband of wife and child, the groom of the bride and the only son say goodbye to the parents. Although they are all heavier, they nevertheless bravely move out, for they trust in God and hope that he will shield them. Even in the August days of 1914 we could see how the men left Saus and Sof to fight for the country. Everyone was happy to go to war, even though they knew that the enemy was great. But even then they had a great deal of tubing, and hoped that God would not throw us away. So far, God has still got our weapons. Because the German Reich did not start the war. The enemies want to crush our empire and destroy our fleet. England does not want us doing sandals in the world. We have the same right as England. For the right we fight."

J. Allen writes about his experience during one of the Air-raids that occurred in London in 1915. He describes how excited he is to see the Zeppelin in the sky, but at the same time scared when the bombing starts. Children were fascinated by the new technologies emerging during the war, but were also scared of the damage they caused. This essays are also proof of how unprepared British were to the air-raids, since they had no prior knowledge of the attacks and citizens received no warning.

France had a good alliance with the United States during the First World War, and as observed in these drawings, kids felt that companionship strongly, both sides looking up to one another. In most of the drawing made by French kids, this alliance between France and the U.S is strongly evident. In the first drawing, U.S troops coming into Paris to help and in the second one, is Columbia (representing the U.S) and Marianne (representing France) joining together.

He describes the moment in which the Zeppelin crashed with a lot of excitement. Patrick says "It had broken in half, and was like this: it was in flames, roaring, and crackling. It went slightly to the right, and crashed down into a field!!" Once again, it is evident how surprised and intrigued children were with the tools used in the war, but they seem to have a particular interest in the Zeppelins.
