Romeo & Juliet and the Role of the Feuding Families

The role of the family in Romeo & Juliet is perhaps the most important, as the feuding families end up being the ultimate downfall for Romeo and Juliet. Were it not for the battle between the Capulets and Montagues, the ending of Romeo and Juliet would have turned out far differently. The feuding causes Romeo’s banishment, the death of Tybalt, and the ultimate suicide of the lovers. In what ways are Romeo and Juliet driven to destruction by the wars of their families? Do the lovers underestimate the hatred between their fathers and overestimate the power of their love to overcome the family feud?

Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is, at its core, a story about the undeniable power of love. Before Romeo and Juliet meet, both of them are involved with another. (This is not a thesis statement) Romeo is infatuated with Rosaline, who does not return his feelings, and Juliet is betrothed to Paris by her father, but shows no true feelings towards him. However, once Romeo meets Juliet, their prospective romances fall apart as their feelings for one another eclipse their respective feelings towards Rosaline and Paris. In what instances is their love for one another different from their feelings towards Rosaline and Paris? How do their interactions vary, and in what ways do the people around them notice these changes?

Adrina and Adel

In Romeo and Juliet, love is naturally the play's dominant and most important theme. The play focuses on romantic love, specifically the intense passion that springs up at first sight between Romeo and Juliet. The idea of romanic love is established in the play's prologue with the line “a pair of star-crossed lovers take their life.” This talks about how Romeo and Juliet love each other so dearly that without each other they would rather be dead, the love is so strong it almost seems unbreakable. Before Romeo and Juliet even meet, both of them are involved with another. At the beginning of the play, Romeo is lovesick over Rosaline. Romeo says that he is in love with Rosaline, but out of her favour. She has obviously not requited his love, and he is very depressed. When Romeo sees Juliet at the Capulet's party, he forgets about Rosaline, which then explains that his "love" for Rosaline was more like infautation. Romeo's love for Juliet compared to Rosaline is very real and his love this time, has been given back to him.

Shakespeare shows the theme of love from the prologue where he had mentioned, ‘A pair of star-crossed lovers’ marking there might be some trouble coming from different backgrounds and ‘Death marked love’ convincing us it’s not an easy love or something but brings mishap.Romeo had been heartbroken after getting jilted from Rosaline while Juliet is being compelled by her parents to fall in love with Paris. Romeo and Juliet found each other admiring and believing themselves in ‘True love’. Whereas Lady Capulet believes in wed being to do with religion and proudness of the Capulets. She doesn’t believe in ones ‘True love’.

The story of Romeo and Juliet depicts strong themes of Love. As the plot of the doomed romance commences, Shakespeare challenges their views on love by introducing characters with conflicting perspectives, even before Romeo and Juliet even meet. [TS] The Nurse makes inappropriate, vulgar jokes, and focuses on the physical part of marriage; not the emotional. Romeo represents the infatuation that young love can show; he is angsty and depressed when Rosaline doesn't reciprocate his intense feelings, claiming he is out of love when discussing it with Benvolio. Both Lady Capulet and Paris view Love as an extension of Marriage; something with honour and pride, but completely necessary and owed.

( By Sophia and Sascha )

Romeo and Juliet is a play depicting the story of two ill-fated lovers from feuding households. The characters in the play vary in personality. They are influenced by the amount of education and money they have. Their love in the play comes off more as lust, since they “fall in love” only a few hours after meeting each other, and get married just a few days later, even though Romeo “loved” Rosaline before meeting her. This makes it seem like they only like each other for sexual reasons
