The carved chest, Chinese vases, and Japanese lacquered boxes are a reference to the flourishing Dutch trade with Asia further showing the family's highstanding place in society and wealth. However, the appearance of music within the painting signifies the harmonious nature of the family due to music making often taking place at an individual's home. On the other hand, in the painting "A Family," the wooden stove, cleaning materials, and sparse meal indicate that the family is deviod of the amenities that would indicate weath during that era. While the family in ""Portrait of a Family Playing Music," comes from much higher means than the family in "A Family," both place importance on the harmony of family. Whereas one family places importance of family time through music, the other places an importance apon dinner and community. During this time, segregation was the sole purpose of hatred and anger, concepts that regularly separated families, however in Lawrence’s masterpiece, he illustrates the beauty that a family unit holds. He focuses on the importance of the parents that, despite the controversial harsh quality of the world, the four walls are filled with love and peace. In the painting “A Timely Repair,” the painter supplies the audience with a somber setting of orphaned children, without parental guidance. It contrasts the unity of the first painting, since the children in the first are between the parents, whereas the children in this piece are isolated from the family unit.
