Once children begin to trust their school counselor, shared information will be expected to stay between the student and the counselor. The obligation of the counselor to keep what is said in confidence by the child is the duty of the school counselor. There are some reasons why the counselor would need to breach that confidentiality and the counselor must know the necessary reasons why.

Confidentiality can be defined as “a professional’s promise or contract to respect clients’ privacy by not disclosing anything revealed during counseling, except under agreed upon conditions" (Hansen, 2015). This topic can be overlooked and forgotten but never forgiven. Children will automatically lose respect and trust in their school counselor once their information is shared outside of their relationship this includes minors.

The primary obligation that school counselors have to students can sometimes get in the way of school personnel and the school counselor. It is not uncommon for teachers to want to know the private information that is discussed with the school counselor. Breaches of confidentiality may be necessary and the counselor must "be aware of the boundaries of their legal
and professional roles and ethical responsibilities, especially to understand the
exceptions to confidentiality" (Trice-Black, Riechel, & Shillingford, 2013).
