Edward Scissor Hands: A Modern Gothic Fairy tale

The first thing the viewer notices watching Edward Scissor Hands for the first time, is it's striking visual style, a trait of its director Tim Burton. Burton uses a distinctive colour pallet of bright colours to contrast with the dark, Gothic tone of Edward's setting and attire. The township is composed primarily of bright colours, from their houses to their clothes, manifesting the ideas of the mundane, uniform and of conformity. Each character is a walking archetype, an amalgamation of his or her surroundings, everyone is barely distinguishable from the next. We can see then that the introduction of Edward Scissorhands is something otherworldly for the town, the likes of which they have never seen. He is different in his actions and appearance, his dark Gothic, almost steampunk look contrasting the dull, colourful look of his patrons. Another point worth mentioning is the narrative structure likened to that of a fairy tale. It follows a similar progression of events the difference lying in the fact that it plays on traditional conventions of a hero, villain and monster and combines them to create a sort of ironic hero, a creation of a 'mad' scientist but with no antagonistic intentions, Edward. He has what you could describe as a look of a monster/villain, but his character introduction and development is that of a hero protagonist.

The composition of the shots and Mise-en-scene when Edward is present on screen usually conveys a tone of juxtaposition and isolation. He stands out among a sea of colour and in some instances motifs and symbols are observable which bring to mind ideas and feelings of his abnormality and detachment from society.

At first glance we can already see that Edward is in stark contrast to every other character in the film. He represents individuality and difference against all the like minded and indistinguishably people of the town.

In a flashback we see that Edward's 'creator' has his initial idea of creating Edward after contrasting with his own cookie cutter machines. The implications are that the creator made Edward as a unique 'man' to stand out from all the cookie cutter machines. This point is further proven in Edward's contrast with the people of the 'cookie-cutter' town and their customs and behaviour.

Parallels to Pop-Culture

As mentioned before Edward Scissorhands plays on traditional conventions of a hero, villain and monster, fusing them to create a main protagonists. Parallels can also be drawn in the subject matter of individuality, conformity and prejudice. One such conection that can be drawn, is Edward Scissorhands' likeness to Boo Radley, from Harper Lee's novel 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. Both novel's have similarities in the prejudice of society to those they are not accustomed to, and the mentality of vilifying those they deem 'different'. Another likely pop culture influence is that of 'Frankenstein'. Both characters, (Frankenstein's Monster and Edward Scissorhands) were made by their inventors to be different and both found difficulty in finding acceptance in society. Both characters also play on tropes commonly found in protagonists and antagonists.
