This is the point in their school career when they choose the subjects they wish to specialise in and continue through to SQA qualifications. Please take time to discuss these choices at home. It is important that decisions are informed and made for the right reasons.


S2 pupils will choose five subjects, selecting one from each column (A–E).


All pupils will also study English and Mathematics in Columns F and G.


General advice:

  • Choose subjects you enjoy, not just those your friends are choosing.

  • Choose subjects where you are performing well. Use your tracking as a guide.

  • If you have even a rough idea about what you'd like to do beyond school, check what qualifications you need and ensure you have chosen these.

  • If you are interested in a career in construction or engineering, take some advice on whether you need Mathematics of Applications of Maths. It's difficult to switch pathways further up the school.
