21-22 WSVMI Sem 3--Supporting Peer Partnerships by WestEd/SVMI Mathematics Network

Respond to the following two questions: 1) After reading the excerpt, how can you see “productive partnerships” providing opportunities for students to generate genuine mathematical questions and conjectures?
All math classrooms have “norms” or accepted ways of working together. How do Tracy’s instructional moves in the vignette help to establish class mathematical norms? What norms are being established?
Read and respond to a few of your fellow participants’ responses. (If you are one of the first to add to the Padlet wall, remember to check back later after others have had a chance to share their thoughts.)

Productive partnerships allow students to share and discuss their ideas. It provides them an opportunity to ask questions, wonder, and extend their learning through conversation. This time to connect and verbally process deepens their thinking of the concept. Tracy's instructional norms helped students know how to actually have a conversation with each other and established expectations for how they should act in those conversations. It also provided them with tools for what to do when they had a disagreement. The norms being established were how to physically sit and have a conversation, how to take turns, and what to do in the event of a disagreement. She also has a routine signal to get the students attention and directions written on the board which helps her keep the class moving along and stay on task.

The exchange allows partners to ask for clarification or expand on ideas shared. She also set norms for keeping the discussion on topic, such as taking turns and how to respectfully disagree.

Productive partnership allows students to explore and discover the understanding of math through genuine discussion. It allows students to feel they can share and their affective filter is down because there is no wrong or right answer. All ideas are equally valued. Also the teacher gets a glimpse of how students process their math.
Tracy's norms were to listen, as well as speak, and that all of the discussion is valued. By repeating the ideas students are sharing, it shows the importance of being heard. Norms allow all the students to share their ideas and be validated in what they think. They also stay focused and learn respect in a discussion forum.

Productive Partnership allows for students to be able to share, build-off of, and explore ideas. Through exchanging their thoughts and ideas, students may find that they share answers but have different perspectives. The teacher is able to listen in and support students in their ideas. She set norms which allowed the students to know when one another was ready to discuss, how to respectfully converse, and that all thoughts on the topic are welcomed.

The use of productive partnerships provide opportunities for students to engage with a variety of thinking and strategies. In addition, it may provide ways for students to adapt and develop their own thinking. Especially, when they're "stuck" on a problem or struggling with understanding a concept.

Providing students with different opportunities to share their variety of thinking is huge! I've use a raekenrek before with a book about a double decker bus. Just providing student time to think, share and collaborate with others gives them a new perspective of thinking. Productive partnering helps students discover and understand math in a deeper way.

Creating activities where students can productively work in groups provides students with opportunities to use 21st century skills. With the teacher modeling how to re-voice partner's responses students are developing their listening skills as well as getting an opportunity to hear how someone else's understanding.
