I have learned that conceptual understanding means understanding that connects factual, procedural, and metacognitive knowledge.

Conceptual understanding enables learners to be aware and critical of their own knowledge and understanding. it allows to apply skills, knowledge, and understandings to new or different contexts in generative, autonomous, dynamic ways.

Conceptual understanding supports IB mission because it enables learners to: Conceive of multiple solutions to a problem, imagine multiple perspectives on issues, and understand more deeply how ideas change in different contexts.

The frayer model is a graphic organizer used to help the students develop a deep understanding of a concept by exploring its key aspects and it consists of four main sections: Definition, facts, examples, and non-examples.

This model encourages critical thinking, helps students differentiate between similar concepts, and enhances vocabulary development.

Designing for conceptual understanding.

There are 6 strategies that help in building and developing conceptual understanding, and they can be chosen according to the unit of inquiry. These strategies are:

1- Representation: Using multiple modes to represent ideas that apply across various problems, contexts or situations.

2- Classification: Connecting physical objects or phenomena to a conceptual category.

3- Generalization: Connecting and moving from facts, to concepts, to generalizations.

4- Concepts- in- use: Concepts are explicitly modelled and linked together. They are learned and assessed within conceptual models, then applied in different contexts.

5- Internalization: Transforming an individual physical or material activity into other mental and conceptual forms of that same external activity to acquire new understandings.

6- Near- and - far transfer: The application of concepts across different aspects of a knowledge domain (near) or across other knowledge domains (far) to develop skills and understandings across physical and social contexts.

We are currently exploring the Unit of Inquiry Sharing the Planet, focusing on the introduction of living and non-living things. To help students grasp the concept of living, I utilized the Frayer Model, allowing them to define the term, identify its characteristics, provide examples, and distinguish it from non-living things. This approach not only structured their understanding but also encouraged critical thinking and deeper engagement with the topic.

Implementing the Frayer Model and interactive strategies had a significant impact on students' understanding and engagement. By breaking down the concept of living things into definitions, characteristics, examples, and non-examples, students developed a clearer and more structured understanding of the topic. The visual and organized format made abstract ideas more concrete, helping them retain information better.

Additionally, using hands-on activities and discussions encouraged critical thinking and active participation.
