Shah’s Modernization Program- Was put into place in 1963 and became one of the biggest calls to revolution because they felt like they were being changed way too much. Modernization was going on for 16 years and the citizens noticed that they were being changed not only in technology but also in their religion to be more Western and secular.fdfdf All these events were called the white revolution because it was the Iranians vs. the white people. Americans were involved because The Shah pushed for quick change within Iran and it led to the start of the revolution. Some of the people that worked in the government really disliked the fact that America had put someone in power without the Iranians having a choice.

The image I chose works because this was a speech that had declared The White Revolution. This speech was set up by Khomeini and he was an inspirational person that was willing to do anything no matter the punishment so that he could set his country free from what The Shah had done. This picture shows the amount of people that attended this speech and also shows how many people that Khomeini had inspired to fight back.

Khomeini arrested

January 24, 1963

Khomeini’s exile- Two days after Khomeini gave the speech to the people because he was so motivational that he had to do something about it but it was way too late. Khomeini was good at speaking because he was the one that put the fire into each one of the citizens showing them that they needed to make change. But when he was exiled by Shah a lot of problems arose because the community loved Khomeini and they wanted him to be let back into the country. But The Shah didn’t want that because the people thought that Khomeini was super inspiring. Due to him being super inspiring and being against the Shah’s power this made people turn against The Shah. Because of his speech that he gave he set a large portion of the country to fight back against the government. Khomeini was exiled for 15 years and during those years the people that he spoke to fought for all that time so that they could be free from the Shah.

This picture works because it shows that Khomeini was arrested and was taken away in a car. This shows us that The Shah took him as a threat because if he wasn't then he wouldn't have been arrested. Also his face shows no remorse for what he had done and that he was fearless of The Shah because what he had spoken would lead them to freedom away from The Shah's rule.

Khomeini Speech

January 22, 1963

Khomeini’s speech- Khomeini was an important person with convincing points and he was impactful which made him dangerous to The Shah’s regime. denouncing the Shah and everything that he did happened on Jan 22, 1963. He stated that it was the citizens' job to start a revolution if the government ever tries to take more power than they had. (Khomeini: "We Shall Confront the World with Our Ideology"”) Also that it was their responsibility to fight back against the government for the country back. His speech was very strong and convinced many that starting the revolution would be the best thing that they could do to go back to their old government. The people had been pulled in by the convincing speech which would make people want to fight in the revolution against the Shah. Also Khomeini had declared war against the Americans in the speech as well (“Timeline of the Iranian revolution”).

The image I chose works because the importance of the speech was even televised throughout the world. This also shows that not just a few countries were dealing with the backfire of what was going on but the whole world was dealing with the footprints that were left on Iran. Iran was known for their large exports of oil which made a large difference when they stopped.

Jan 9, 1978

Protest in the city of Qom- with thousands of people attending protests in an attempt to free themselves from being under the Shah's dictatorship. During the protest the army became aggressive and started killing protesters, the authorities only got a hold of 5 protesters' lives. This was also one of the lowest killings during a protest in Iran but was one of the first major protests. People saw that The Shah just wanted to remove people that were against him so that made them want to fight for change even more, this caused people to make the protests much more violent and more deadly to both sides of the protests. (“Timeline of the Iranian revolution”)

This image works because this takes place in the city of Qom which is where this picture was taken. Also this shows the amount of people that supported the causes of Khomeini. This picture shows that these people were fighting for the same cause that Khomeini was fighting for.

Jun 7, 1978

Shah replaced the SAVAK leader- Shah gave in but only agreed to put someone that they wanted in the position of SAVAK( secret police). (“Timeline of the Iranian revolution”) Shah thought that this would appease the protesters and would make them rethink protesting because someone that they wanted in power would have to deal with the problems. But people only got more upset because instead of trying to change what was going on he was just working for Shah and not fighting for change and they knew that Shah was trying to loosen them up from their protests. People started protesting even more violently and consistently because they really wanted to fight for a change.

The picture I chose works because this is The Shah in other words the person that changed the head of SAVAK. This picture works because the SAVAK was Shah's secret police which would protect him in dangerous situations.

Aug 19, 1978

Fire killing in Rex Theaters- hundreds of protesters were locked inside of Rex Theaters and was locked and then later set ablaze by the police. (Englund) Shah tried to remove participation in any part during this but people knew that he had caused the killing of people in a fire. People knew this because he had conflict with these people beforehand. The Shah tried to convince the citizens after all his acts of violence against them that he had absolutely nothing to do with the fire. There were around 400 victims inside of the building when it was set on fire. Police barricaded all of the sides and didn’t let people pass so that the people inside would die. Around 40 minutes later the firetrucks showed up and put out the fire but it was too late because all of the people inside were burnt to death. (Englund) And if people tried to pass they would be beaten with batons.

This picture works because it shows the damage that was left after the fire. You can also see no one because everyone was burnt to death and the firemen were to late to the scene. This also shows us that all The Shah was trying to do was get rid of these people.

Sept 8, 1978

Martial Law- Was put into place because he noticed that he couldn’t do anything to stop the protesters from violently. The authorities were given complete power to enforce the laws however as long as it stopped, they also could create new laws to stop the people. Also the authorities would sometimes abuse their authority and they would attack the protesters. The Army was given unlimited authority over what the people had and that would lead to abuse of power. The Shah thought that by setting up martial law would stop the citizens from protesting because they would be punished and killed by the army. Though the citizens felt so passionate and they continued regardless of the consequences. (“Timeline of the Iranian revolution”)

This picture works because it shows us the people that were arrested because they were either out to late or the military thought that they were sketchy. This shows how messed up the system was because their were some people doing nothing and they were accused of whatever crime because the military thought that they were acting weird.

Nov 4, 1979

Hostage Crisis- Khomeini led to the capture of 54 U.S. ambassadors and they were captured for 444 days. And there was a rescue mission which horribly failed due to a sand storm which led the helicopter out of control and hitting another helicopter which led to a killing of 8 people and a few were left terribly injured. They had to ditch the mission because the helicopter that was going to hold the ambassadors was the biggest helicopter and crashed. Everyone was mad at the government because they felt as if they were playing the safe game instead of trying to do everything that we could in order to save the ambassadors. A few of them escaped by pretending to be Canadian and let them go because the Iranians had nothing against the Canadians.

This image works because it shows the hostages when they were captured. Also this shows how determined the people were because they were doing everything in their power to get rid of The Shah. They even went after U.S. ambassadors in order to get their voice heard from America. And that if they have to do crimes in order to make a change they would because this felt like an injustice and was incorrect for them to be taken over.

May 8, 1979

The Execution- 21 former government officials were executed for following the orders of The Shah. The people were mad at all of them because they weren’t trying to head back to their old government, instead they pushed for what The Shah wanted and had no problem doing so. They were given the punishment for treason and were publicly hanged due to their actions against the country and supporting The Shah’s cause. They were thought of as traitors because they didn’t try to overthrow The Shah from doing harmful things to the country. This hanging was led by Khoemini because he was chosen to be in control of Iran which meant that he chose the punishment for the 21 former government officials. (“Timeline of the Iranian revolution”)

This image doesn't come from the actual hanging of the officials but it shows that there were people that hung them in public. Also this shows that what the officials had done to the country was incorrect and that all they were doing was abusing their power that they had over the country which led them to being executed.

Revolutionary Council- The revolutionary council was created so that the exit of The Shah was monitored so that he couldn’t get back in. Khomeini that had been exiled by The Shah in the past was now exiled by the person that he had exiled. Also this had declared that education and belief would be 100% Islamic. This would mean that nothing that they have can be changed because everything would be specifically directed to Islam. It also signifies liberty from The Shah because things that were practiced in the past came back and what was set previously was removed. This council also helped fully clear up the problems of the Iranian revolutions.

This picture shows us that all of these people were against what The Shah was doing to the country. Also this shows that these people felt strongly about The Shah being removed from power. Also they were making sure that The Shah would be watched as he left the country.
