The Estates General was a public class system divided into three groups. The First Estate was the church, the Second Estate were the nobles, and the Third Estate were the commoners. This system created a lot of inequality in France due to the heavy taxes implemented on the Third Estate and the money being spent on the King and Queen rather than the public. The inequality eventually led to the Third Estate creating the National Assembly, where representation is based on population. The goal of this was for the Third Estate to be equally represented with the rest of the population. This did not sit well with the upper Estates because they did not want to give up the luxury of a life they were living and because they did not understand the Third Estates situation. When the National Assembly was about to take place, the First and Second Estates locked the Third Estate out of the meeting. Irritated, the Third Estate gathered into a tennis court and promised not to disband with one another until they got what they wanted, creating the Tennis Court Oath. When the King found out about this, instead of giving them what they wanted or compromising, he arrested everyone who was involved.

The Storming of the Bastille was the commoners' attempt to revolt against the soldiers, free political prisoners, and gain weaponry. Commoners attempted this because they thought that the King arresting them and their peers was an attack on their rights and were afraid that the National Assembly would be destroyed. The King’s response to the Tennis Court Oath was responsible for this event. After this, the people began to march on the Palace of Versailles because of the price of bread and the Queen’s spending habits. I think it is justifiable because the commoners had the right to be angry. They were heavily taxed for no reason and watched all of their hard earned money be spent on cakes and dresses. The Legislative government is when the government works with the people to keep them and the King happy, also known as a constitutional monarchy. This fails because trying to keep the monarchy and the people happy and stable, it would create a weak leadership and could be easily corruptible. The First republic was France’s third attempt at a government, led by Maximillian Robespierre. The goal for this attempt was for France to finally be equal. Robespierre was an advocate for the Third Estate and peoples rights, but would soon begin to kill anyone who went against his beliefs, beginning the Reign of Terror.

The Directory consisted of an Upper House and Lower House. The Lower House would propose a legislative idea for the government and the Upper House would accept or veto whatever the Lower House proposed. The main problem with this is that it was easily corruptible, as the Upper House could veto anything they wanted and keep all the power to themselves. Napoleon Bonaparte was very impactful to France. His rise to power began when he staged the Coup d'état to overthrow the Directory. His many political changes would include: the Napoleonic Code, which simplified laws for France. Eliminating the estates system for more equality and allowed religious freedom. He restored a centralized government, where the government is more focused on one level of the Estates rather than all of them. He increased reforms in education, allowing all men to get an education. He improved France’s relationship with the Pope for more support. Finally, he sold the Louisiana Purchase to the United States to help fund the campaign. Napoleon did leave a legacy behind, France dominating Europe and his family were rulers of his conquered nations.
