Charles I was a sickly child. He even surprised his family when he made it to the age of 5. However, when his father became King of England, Ireland and Scotland in 1603, he was left on his own with a guardian in Scotland while the rest of the family went to London.
Sources say Charles I was an awkward child and young adult with a severe stutter. Not really liking to talk to strangers, when his older brother died and Charles became heir, he was seen as misplaced.

A petition sent to Charles I concerning the 'Rights and Liberties of Subjects.' It followed a period of disputes between the King and Parliament over taxes.

Charles had sent parliament home on 11th July 1625 as they refused to listen to the King's demands but he recalled them on August 1st to raise taxes for war with Spain.

Members of Parliament were unhappy with their treatment by the King and demanded the removal of one of Charles' key allies, the Duke of Buckingham, from his role in the King's Privy Council. Charles I refused and parliament was again dismissed on 12th August 1625.

What followed was a tense period during which Charles imprisoned his enemies in parliament without trail and resorted to martial law (using the military) to try and scare parliament into submission.

This petition was eventually passed in 1528 despite Charles' best efforts to stop it. It is said the approval of this petition was greeted with widespread public celebrations.
