Working conditions - Chiashuen

I an infer that the working conditions are bad as they are working as a cleaner or sweeping the floor instead of doing job like teachers.
The working conditions before the Japanese Occupation was quite comfortable for a certain group of people. From Source 8 on pg 17: ”I called Mr Tan Ah Hung , a senior Chinese teacher ,’Sir’ when i spoke to him, until I was advised that this embarrassed him in the kind of world we lived in. My starting salary of $400 was far higher that his even thought he had many years of most valued service. Salary and skin colour were what mattered , not personal merit and achievement.” , Mr Francis Thomas is a British in Singapore and his starting salary is about $400 but his senior Chinese teacher, Mr Tan Ah Hung , who have work for quite a long time in that school has a lower pay than him.

This shows that Europeans were given a better privileged treatment regardless of their jobs experience. The local working condition were not as good as the british people but people did not voice out show that the condition for local were still ok.
But during the Japanese Occupation , when the British was defeated . The working conditions there were harsh as the Japanese ordered the Allied prisoners of war (POWs) to do the menial task outside their camps such as repairing and cleaning the dock facilities .

Hence, British people has to work for food and the food given was so little that most of them are very thin and malnourished. Not only the POWs is being treated harshly , some of locals were killed because they were suspected of helping/supporting the British. For the locals there a people who felt that JO does not change the working condition much but there are people whose working condition change a lot. Like for the rickshaw puller:“The Japanese Occupation did not affect me much .Just that I had to eat food of a poorer quality. I was only a laborer . As long as there was work , there was income. That was good enough for me”(Textbook source 36)His life did not change much.

But for some of the locals they were force to work at the O changi railway which in the end they died. The people in picture was very tired and their bone are exposed hence we can see that they have a tough working condition.

Food was not a problem before the Japanese came. The locals have enough food for their families. There is a change before the war and after the war. People before the Occupation did not have to worry of not having enough food and facilities. But the people during the Occupation was worried about not having enoughfood for their family and have food shortage. The Japanese Occupation have made many changes and had a large impact on the lives of people in Singapore.

I can infer that Singapore was running low of food and other resources when the Japanese took over.
Singapore was renamed to Syonan-to meaning 'Light of the South' as the Japanese took over. The locals suffered and that time was tough. As the Japanese took over Singapore, our resources ran low, and we have little food left.
Most people started to eat sweet potato or tapioca for their meals with porridge. Basic food necessities like rice, salt and sugar went trough rationing in order to control it. Ration cards were given out to limit the amount of food given to each person. People have to wake at 3.00 to queue up for the food for ration. Tapioca was really common during the war and the people started to make tapioca recipes. It could be steamed and cut into fries and made into Ubi Kayu. Boil it with some coconut milk and it can be made into a delicious snack. Tapioca mashed into flour could be made into keropok. The flour could also be be made into sago flour. Kang kong, excess long bean and other vegetables could be exchanged for another vegetable or a piece of fish,if any.

That shows the different aspect of people. Therefore, it concludes that the Japanese Occupation bought many hardships to people.

(The picture below shows food rationing during the Japanese occupation.)

Before the Japanese Occupation, mostly British people depends on what language school they went and also depends on their race.

During the Japanese Occupation, however, vernacular schools were the first to re-open which started with primary schools in 1942. 20 Malaya schools started class. In Syonan, they focused on teaching of the Japanese language was taught in many ways. The Syonan Times, a newspaper that was published during the Japanese Occupation, published a daily column of Nippon-go lesson, which taught the readers basic Japanese greetings and how to count. The Syonan Radio also broadcasted Japanese lesson daily. Libraries were stocked with books on japan and its language and of course, culture.

Hence, during the Japanese Occupation, people don't really get to choose what language to study as they were all force to only focus on Japanese language.

I can infer that from the source below shows how the amusement park look like before the japanese took over

Before the Japanese Occupation the amusement park was open to all. It was established in 1929 and closed down in 1978. It provided entertainment and leisure to people with the multiple entertainments. It was happy world for everyone. Singaporeans of different age group will also get to enjoy the multiple games and it was created to the middle

During the Japanese occupation, the Japanese turned all the amusement parks to gambling dens and encourage the chinese penchant for gambling throughout Malaya. The direct lottery tickets were sold by the government employees. This allowed the Japanese to control inflation and raise money. The bright light at the worlds continued to attract many gamblers and dens were often crowded.

I can infer that from source 21 the picture shows that movies were all screening about Japanese propaganda movies and not any movies from other countries

Cinema started screening Japanese propaganda movie such as the "Fall of Singapore" and '"Tsubassa no Gaiko" to instill the Asian belief in Japanese military supremacy and extolseishin-the Japanese spirit of loyalty, discipline and determination. Many people watched these films due to the lack of alternative movie choice. The Japanese ministry took total control over public events cinema and many more. Film directors could not ridicule the military and demoralize the nation. They were told not to: exaggerate the ruelties of war with.

Hence, there was a big change in the peoples life for recreational activities. Before the Japanese Occupation, there was a big variety of entertainment and activities for the people to enjoy for leisure. But after the Japanese defeated the British and took control of Ssingapore things were a lot more different,

I can infer from the source that the clothing then and now have changed completely throughout the years .

Before : This picture shows a family with a father and a young girl eating porridge together in a messed up house with dirty clothes . This shows how horrible their life was to survive in that condition .

During : During the Japanese Occupation of Singapore , there were minimal clothing . The POWs did not wear much . They wore mainly shorts or long pants with belts and their bare chests showed how malnourished they were . Men had short hair . Young children however sometimes wore tops for the guys , including shorts or long pants . The girls wore plain tops with shorts or dresses . The young children also mainly walked around barefooted . Some of the older men wore tops and long pants or shorts with belts , also mostly with no shoes . The older women however , wore pretty and elegant tops with past - the - knee skirts and sandals . They kept their hair short too . Most females kept their hair short to trick the Japanese into thinking that they were men . This prevented them from getting raped by the Japanese .

People’s life did have a very big difference before and after the Japanese occupation. Before the Japanese occupation, people were living a peaceful life where they get the job they wanted to do and earn money for food and to buy clothing. Their pays may not be the same but it’s enough for them to survive. Students can even choose the subjects they wanted to take like Chinese and English. But after the Japanese occupation, everything was the opposite, they were forced to work long hours with only small amount of pay that’s not even enough for themselves and they still need to feed their own family. Their clothing also became lesser, even students need to study Japanese. It was very tough for the people there as many of them were starving due to the low amount of food they get.
