The Puritans

The puritans were the founders of America. They were very religious and had distinct religious beliefs that still shape the way we live today. They were disliked by Charles II because the puritans were trying to shut down the Catholic church, his hatred toward the puritans is what caused them to leave England. Once the puritans left they landed on Plymouth Rock and established the Massachusetts Bay Colony. With this they put forward all their beliefs and made sure everyone followed them.

Witches

Some time passed with the puritans settling into America. Then once a girl (Betty Parris) and a bunch of other girls in the town got ill and started experiencing the same symptoms and unusual behavior. The doctor came and took a look, he said it was due to some supernatural behaviors (based on their beliefs). The whole town freaked out and thought it was witches. The little girls did not help though, they began accusing people and saying that those "witches" were cursing them. The accused witches were mainly your lower class and workers, such as maids, farmers, teachers, etc.

Witch Trials

The Salem witch trials took place every time the girls would accuse a person. They would bring the accused in and strip her of her clothing to check for the "third nipple." The third nipple was believed that the witches had this in order to lour and feed demon children. Other times, when witch would come into the court room the girls would scream as if they were in pain or they would copy the movements, words, and actions that the person made. The girls would accuse anyone they did not like or anyone that was below them, eventually they got power hungry and started accusing the upper class and the people that were super religious. Once the trials were over if they were guilty they were usually hung to death. One man was stoned because he refused to admit he was a witch, they kept piling heavy rocks on him until he finally said "more" and the last rock collapsed his chest, killing him.

Tituba

Tituba was an African American, lower class maid or nanny. She worked for the Parris family and often took care of the 2 girls. Tituba was not as religious as normal puritans, she studied and practiced more of her African culture. She practiced voodoo and black magic, she also taught the girls voodoo and some black magic spells. This was until one of the girls got sick. The most obvious answer was that Tituba was a witch and the one that cursed her. She was the first to be accused of being a witch and the first to admit to it as well.

Puritans beliefs

The puritans were known to be extremely religious and only live by their certain beliefs. They were very crucial to the thought that Jesus only died for certain people and that others were doomed to hell, and that this was determined as soon as you were born. Their biggest dream was to live like a city upon a hill, the thought of a utopian society or having one nation under god. Another strong belief was that all non-explainable bad things that happened to them was because of the devil. The puritans built a lot of schools that supported their beliefs and were built on the ideology of praising the Lord, but within these schools only the men could study and learn the word of god. There are many more beliefs but these are definitely their main ones.
