3. Role of the Producer / Preparation for my pitch

During the start of the lesson we went through the producers responsibilities for pre-production. This included casting and crewing, budgeting, locations and ethical considerations.

Casting

First off I thought about how to create a perfect cast, we learnt that you need to break down you character and take into consideration who would be a good match for the roles.

For example

Size

Age

Gender

Height

Characteristics

We were also introduced with how to cast actors for our film.

BAMP students

TAPP students

Casting calls

Crewing

This is where I needed to think of how to recruit my crew, I needed to take into consideration of how many crew members I would need and also who would be best fit for each role.

Budgeting

Next was budgeting, as the producer I needed to create a budget timetable for our pitch, which I learnt on how to do during the lesson. As a group we were given a budget of £250 to work off. I needed to think of all the aspects I would need to account for, splitting up all the costs of production to create the table.

Locations

We were told that when it came to location we needed to put ourselves out there when researching different locations. As my film is quite natural I couldn't be too extravagant with the locations. Some places I considered were

University fashion design classroom

Somewhere in Manchester on the streets

Housing

Ethical

As being the producer I needed to take into consideration of any ethical issues relating to:

Cast

Crew

Audience

Public

Pitch

After going through all of the producer responded we went onto a pitch, as our pitch is next week, we need to know what makes a good pitch,

To create a perfect pitch I need to create something that is compelling to the audience, make it unique, clear communication, and also evidence to back up my points.

A proof of concept is a smaller version of what of what the full project would look like, examples of a proof of concept can include:

Trailer - Demonstrates scenes and the general plot and mood for a film

Test Shots - Focuses on visual language

Filmed Scene - Showcases visual style and the ability to direct actors.

we are now working individually on our pieces and during this lesson we went through all the different types of a proof of concept to decide which one each person wants to choose. After hearing all about each one, I went for a filmed scene as my proof of concept.

I chose a filmed scene as I want to focus on performance, and as I thought for me this would be the best option to show my story for my film.

This lesson was very important for me as I am doing a filmed scene which is mainly focused on the acting and relationships between me and the actors, so I was really focused on getting all of the information given during this session.

During this lesson I learnt all of the responsibilities when working with actors this includes:

a professional environment

a safe environment

time management

being organised

respect

communication

When working with actors I need to create a professional environment to make them feel safe, I need to be able to take their views and options into consideration and also be respectful towards them. Doing all of these things will keep the professionalism alive. The actors need to feel like their trusted otherwise the production will end up failing.

If I manage my time well with planning within the preparation, rehearsals, meetings and letting the cast and crew know everything in advance, this will create a perfect work environment when it comes to production.

I increased my skills on teamwork and also individual work, there were some struggles with casting, editing and paperwork, but in the end everything came together. During this course I learnt lots of new skills in directing and producing, it made me understand a lot more about the production side of things rather than just the film. I learnt how to create all types of paperwork, developed more camera skills and also increased my editing ability. One of my favourite parts of this course was how different each week was, it wasn't the same thing each week, I also loved how it increased my ability to work on my own more.
