Any new changes in the family?
parent-
teacher- How is their language coming along?
parent-
teacher- what is the primary language you are using at home?
parent-
teacher- I see, that is great you are talking and singing to your child, the teachers are working with the child in both english and spanish.
parent-
teacher- how do you feel about this situation? English and Spanish Dual language learning?
parent-
teacher- Wow, tell me more about your child using primarily spanish at home, how does that feel? Do you need any tools?
parent-
teacher- I appreciate you working on spanish at home with her, Dual language learners that carry on their dual languages fluently can receive a seal of bi-literacy, did you know this?
parent-
teacher- yes, the importance of dual language is very imminent. When a child is a dual language learner they can really go so far. Most jobs require both english and spanish now, and usually gives a higher pay as well.
parent-
teacher- do you agree with the teachers working with your child in english and spanish?
parent-
teacher- I appreciate your work with your child and one day your child will definitely be able to show you much appreciation in learning two languages from the beginning because its so much easier to learn as they grow both languages.
parent-
teacher- thank you for your time, please let me know if you need any tools or anymore understanding of what we can do to work on the dual languages together as a team. You, myself and the child.

Hello Shonna I would like to take the time to explain the importance of Dual Language Learning in the classroom and at home. Is that okay with you?
Okay, well since you and I are both primarily English speakers its really easy to get into our normal day to day routine of speaking only english to the children because its all we know. But, did you know through speaking English at school to them and them speaking only spanish at home it is benefitting them as dual language learners. Wow, isn't that impressive that they are so young but, already grasping so much information, even learning two languages at the same time? Dual language learners are developing not only their primary home language but, they are developing their second language right her at the center! And do you know what else those dual language learners bring besides their home language to the center? No? Well they bring CULTURE, this culture brings so much more than just language, it brings dispositions, opinions, different views, values and fun celebrations as well that all the children can engage in together. This is such a great opprotunity for the center, did you know that? How about this, try somethings simple. Try learning and using the two languages in the center, which are only spanish and english at the moment. Find a teacher that knows spanish and learn some emotions that you can help the children identify in both english and spanish. Help the children first and simply with their social-emotional well being. You wont be surprised to see how much they can express and how easy they may be able to express their needs and feelings to you and diminish frustrating behaviors due to being unable to understand their language.

Family Language and Cultural Interview Reflection:

When doing the Family Cultural Interview I had a great time learning more about the child in the program as well as the mother and her life with the child. She seems very joyful and just needs to be seen as a human and not just a random “parent from the program”. Learning that GZ really knows English and Spanish both completely is so nice to see as she truly is setting the foundation to a dual language learning life full of so many options and so many amazing opportunities. I learned things like mom speaks both English and Spanish, both extremely fluently. Which is so nice. Mom really enjoyed the concept of dual language learning and the fact that GZ has such a bright future! We both talked on ways we can work together to help GZ learn both a strong English at school and a strong Spanish at home and mix them through other Spanish speaking teachers at the center. We also talked about how I could learn some more simple phrases as I am already, that I can use to talk with her daughter as well as other students in the program that might speak only Spanish. Mom brought a amazing idea of volunteering to talk and read in Spanish as well as dance. He father picks up sometimes and she said he could talk more in Spanish when he picks up GZ. Since this interview he has talked to the children little by little at pickups in Spanish and also mom has. This is such a fun way to incorporate such a amazing opportunity by pulling parents and teachers and the families together to get the children more engaged in dual language learning.

Well, being that my center is and has been closed and I am not able to access the drive on the computer there with my saved information I printed out. I basically would like to explain here what I added to my classroom detailed. I added a sign that says "please use your home language" and also have it in spanish as well. I also added signs around the classroom in english and spanish because those are the two languages represented in the classroom. Because I work with toddlers obviously they are unable to read them, we all know this as fact. But, I am using them as a resource for myself to be able to use and remember common words and phrases in spanish. I have also been asking and responding to my coworker in spanish so that I am able to learn more spanish myself and show the children that it is okay to use the home language. I have also added to our daily schedule with all of the common routines and daily times with spanish as well. so that I can better talk and represent that language in the classroom. I hope this is enough, and that it meets the requirements! I just do not have access to any of the work I have done nor can I send pictures because we are not allowed to go to the classrooms. Thank you in advance for reading! I hope this helps meet the requirements.
