The Beginning

In 1938 the possibility of a nuclear bomb seemed to be a reality, so in 1942 the Manhatten Project was created by the US Army. Led by Robert Oppenheimer, they successfully created the world's first atomic bomb. The US then proceeded to use the bomb on the Japanese cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. This caused mass controversy and led Oppenheimer the "father" of the atomic bomb to regret his invention.

IAEA Is Created

The International Atomic Energy Agency was created with the intent to promote peaceful use of Nuclear power and President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s "Atoms for Peace” speech is considered to be what started the agency. It's the first time we see the potential damage of these weapons on a mass scale.

Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

The NPT managed to put under control all of the world, (mostly the US and USSR) to take initial steps toward limiting their nuclear weapons. Non-nuclear-weapon states agree not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons, while nuclear-armed states commit to disarmament.

Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty-tried to prohibit all nuclear explosions, both for civilian and military purposes. While it has been signed by many nations, it has not been completely ratified due to some countries, including key nuclear powers, not ratifying it.

Iran Nuclear Deal-An agreement between Iran and a group of world powers aimed at limiting Iran's nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. However, the US was forced to withdraw in 2018.

Strategic Arms Reduction Treaties-These treaties between the United States and Russia aimed to reduce the number of nuclear weapons in both countries. The most recent treaty, New START, was signed in 2010, focusing on limiting nuclear warheads and delivery systems.

Democrats vs Republicans

Republicans tend to support nuclear proliferation. They believe in having a strong nuclear arsenal to use as a deterrent against other nations. We can see this through their value of having a strong natural defense. They think it’s important that only the US leads the world in nuclear arsenal.

Democrats have been on the opposite side of this. They put focus on arms control, reducing nuclear stockpiles and helping stop the spread. It was the Democrats that started the treaties that we read before and many Democrats advocate for the reducing of nuclear weapons in national security.

Life Cycle Effect

We can see the lifecycle effect take place here, because since there hasn’t been any real wars or threats of wars, and the people that were here for the horrors of World War II, many people don’t see any need for all these nuclear weapons. The people who were in charge during the Cold War, and the voters are now starting to become the minority compared to younger fresher voters.

We can also see nationalism for an effect here. A lot of nuclear proliferation is about what country has the most nuclear arsenal. So all of this competition we can see how nuclear weapons can spread.
