What I Already Know About Gender Equality.

I know that in America today, women are not treated equally in every aspect of their everyday lives. There are multiple examples of women being oppressed in the workplace, unfair access to healthcare, extra charge for feminine products, being targeted for being a woman, and way more. The most commonly known form of women's oppression is access to abortion. The law is trying to take away women's right to their bodies because of their religion or personal views. This is unfair because despite a personal opinion people should have a choice to choose what they want to do with their bodies. It is unfair and unjust that there are multiple examples of why women are thought less than a man based on their gender. This is something that could be easily changed and fixed in America if we faced the harsh reality of the state we are in. This is an important and interesting topic because it affects every women's daily life and it needs to change.

This source provides the sexism in products geared towards women and the effect it has on millions statewide. This sexism started from a young age, toys are named more masculine things for boys and more girly things for girls. The "pink tax" is not actually a tax that is added to women's products, this term is used to refer to the "upcharge on products traditionally intended for women." This is based on the capitalistic mindset that we need to make money off of anything we can. Hundreds of products statewide have an increased in pricing on products geared towards women and girls. This is especially difficult for people from low-income households who cannot already afford the products they need for basic hygiene. What makes it worse is the tax price on pads, tampons, liners, and cups. Multiple states choose not to exempt pricing on this item even though they are necessary for women in America, but they chose to exempt taxing on marshmallows or a gun-club membership. Other countries have already taken action on this injustice, like Kenya excepting sales tax since 2004. America needs to step up and fix this injustice that affects women's basic right to live.

In America today it is a controversial debate whether women should be able to have abortion. This is something that should not even be considered as a debate, women should be able to decide what they do with their bodies and no one should stop them. In 1973 Roe v. Wade was passed to protect women's right to choose what they want to do, but it is being questioned today. This should have never been questioned and men, who cannot even have abortions, should not be able to vote on this topic. There are many different reasons women may need to get an abortion whether its religion, income, or they are not ready to have a family. It is always a woman's right to decide what she does with her body and no one should take that away. Men should not be able to vote about this topic on the Supreme Court because it does not affect them. This should not be a debate, it is a right to choose what you want with your body. This is just another form of injustice between men and women.

Women gain significantly less in the workplace compared to men even if they are doing the same amount of work. "For every dollar men earn, women earn 82 cents on average." This gap gets significantly worse depending on your race, Hispanic women get paid 0.52 cents and Native American women earn 0.57 cents for every dollar a white man earns. This should not be a problem, everyone should be paid equally if they are contributing the same amount of work regardless of gender or race. Even transgender women are affected by this bias in the pay gap. Men should not be paid significantly more just because a man completed the job. This is a simple fix and everyone should be treated equally and respected in the workplace.

The perils of continuing to stay silent about gender inequality in America is that it will continue to get significantly worse and it will start hurting women. A perfect example of this is abortion, overturning Roe v. Wade is not stopping women from having abortions, it's stopping people from having safe abortions. Low-income households will be affected as well if they cannot afford to buy the necessary items to live their daily lives. There are many ways to fix gender inequality and the sources I provided are just a few examples of how to fix America. This is an easy fix that will positively improve the lives of women statewide. We can see a clear improvement in countries around the world that treat women equally.
