The poetry entitled Scaffolding by Semus Heaney is a love poem that explains how relationships are built over time. It's about how people builds their relationships like a building, a scaffolding helps with the structures over time to build trust. Ultimately, it leads to a relationship that stands like a building in itself without support. Heaney emphasizes the importance of trust among people through five fairly rhyming poems with a rhyme scheme of AA BB CC. The author also uses techniques such as metaphor, alliteration such as solid stone and bridges breaking between, and personification like the line Old bridges breaking between you and me. The "mason" in the first line of the poem is a metaphor that suggests people who share the same interests and are determined to build relationships. The third line, "Make sure that the planks won't slip at busy points" can be interpreted as meaning that if there are difficulties with each other, the two of us will work together to solve the problem and the relationship will not break. "Ladders" also represents an important step of the relationship and to "tighten bolted joints means building mutual trust. Also in the line, "And yet all this comes down when the job is done/ Showing off the walls of sure stone" shows that the strong structure of relationship remains even after the scaffolding is gone. The line "Old bridges breaking between you and me" symbolizes misunderstanding and conflicts in the relationship however in the line "Never fear. We may let the scaffolds fall/ Confident that we have built our wall" is the conclusion that all misunderstandings will be resolved and all struggles will be weathered by a solid foundation of relationships such as scaffolding.
