He was mentally disabled, but was being tested and experimented on, so he could become smart. Before that, Charlie had to write progress reports, and take a certain test everyday where he'd have to race a mouse in a maze. This mouse's name was Algernon, and was a test subject who had the operation before Charlie. Because of this, Algernon always won. Charlie didn't like this, and he started to hate Algernon, but eventually (after Charlie got the operation) he ended up winning against him. Charlie then felt bad for Algernon, so he started to like him. They soon became friends. Later on in the story, Algernon starts to act weird. He refuses to do any tests, and bites Charlie when he tried to pet him. After a few days, Algernon dies. Charlie was very sad, but also scared because he thought he would soon die too, since both Algernon and Charlie had the same operation. Charlie did what he could to try and prevent this, but before he could his intelligence started to go down, and he couldn't understand anything he did. Why I think this is because Charlie only wanted to be smart so he wasn't made fun of and he can understand things a normal adult could, and when he was smart, he was only happy once, when he found out he was getting smart. It was creative, it was original, it had a good background, every little detail. If I had to choose one thing what I liked most about the book, it would be the main character, Charlie (and Algernon). Why I chose this is because I really like Charlie. He's kind, does his best, full of determination, and friendly. Another reason why I like him is because he has a deep connection with a mouse. Normally we wouldn't care much for mice and such, but Charlie did, and managed to become best friends with one, even though he hated him at first. What I disliked about this book is how it ended. I was kind of dissapointed how it didn't tell us what happens to Charlie. Did he die? Where did he go? Is he okay? Did he get what he wanted?
