The definition of being a dictator is a person who came to power himself, and orders people around to do what they want them to do. That is what Cromwell is like; like Jayden said, he is using his powers negatively. One example of him doing that is not letting the members of the Parliament who supported King Charles I into the courtroom. Another example is how he persecuted the Catholics in Ireland.

A dictator is someone who has full control over a country. Cromwell is a dictator because he rigged the votes in court by only letting in the people who want to execute the king. Because of this, the king was executed. He also told his soldiers that swearing or drinking is not allowed, which is very hard for soldiers, even soldiers in modern time. He took full control and even killed the King, King Charles I.

Introduction: Usually people think of dictators as power hungry and abusive as in power wise. But this man, (Oliver Cromwell) made an impact on his troops and England.

Oliver Cromwell was a commander on Parliaments side, and they say he had a big talent for leadership. Oliver Cromwell was raised in a pure Puritan family. Cromwell wanted to inflict these rules on his troops. No drinking or swearing were the rules he inflicted. In another situation where Charles I was put on trial, he over used his power negatively. Oliver ordered troops to stand outside the courtroom and told them to stop the members of Parliament from entering. Soon after Charles I was executed, the army made Oliver the head of the nation. With his power he governed like a King, but he wasn't one. They called him "Lord Protector". His new government system passed laws that reflected puritan ways. With his new power and noble title as "Lord Protector" he decided to try different forms of government and made a new parliament which then later he ended. Sad for Cromwell since none of the methods of government he tried worked well for him. Cromwell tried to lead England to be a successful empire, and a democratic system.

Overview: Oliver Cromwell was a strong and powerful dictator. He might not have agreed with Charles I, or with drinking and swearing. But, he raised England's status and helped defeat Charles I in the Civil War.

Introduction: Oliver Cromwell had an amount of power that made him rule like a dictator. A dictator is a ruler who has total control over the entire country. Some may use their power correctly, but other mis - use for their own selfish reasons.

The first reason Cromwell resembles a dictator, is because he was very strict. He only recruited soldiers like him. This is called leading by example. They were not allowed to smoke, drink alcohol, or swear. He held all his men to Puritan ideals making him very strict. He promoted officers based on their performance, and not on their background and privilege.
Later, Cromwell and other leaders decided to put King Charles I on trial for treason. The next reason he is like a dictator is because, he had his soldiers not allow anyone in Parliament in who did not support the trial. This allowed the votes to be completely filtered and working to his advantage. In result King Charles was convicted and sentenced to death. He abused his power for selfish reasons, allowing him to resemble a dictator because they have a tremendous amount of power. The last and final reason is that after King Charles I was executed the army made Cromwell the head of the nation. Although, he was not a king, he governed with just as much power as one. Using his power he passed laws the reflected Puritan views. The laws told people what the could and could not do on Sunday. He also enforced harsher punishments for swearing, drinking alcohol, etc. He also had the power to switch the type of government, which he experimented with many times. In conclusion, Oliver Cromwell had a king executed and ruled like a mighty dictator.

Overview: Oliver Cromwell was a strong and powerful man who ruled as a dictator. He had King Charles I executed for treason, giving him more power when made head of the nation. He abused his power a few times, but in the end he helped raise England's image and status making it more powerful.

A dictator is a ruler who has total control over a country or land. Oliver Cromwell successfully led the Parliament's army to victory in the English Civil war and was nicknamed "Ironsides" by his troops. He was not happy under the rule of King Charles I and did not approve of his sympathy for Catholics. He organized the trial of King Charles I and wanted him tried for treason which was a shocking idea and objected to by Members of Parliament. However, the army under Cromwell was stronger than Parliament, and soldiers stopped members of Parliament who opposed the trial from entering the courtroom. King Charles I was convicted and sentenced to death. Cromwell came to be known as a king’s executioner. As the Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell passed laws that reflected his Puritan views, and he imposed very harsh policies against Catholics in Ireland. Thousands of men, women, and children died at the hands of Cromwell's soldiers. When Cromwell could not agree with his Parliament, he dissolved it - not once, but twice. He ruled the country through eleven major generals, which meant that England virtually became a military dictatorship. Thus, Oliver Cromwell earned the reputation of being a dictator.

A dictator can be defined as a ruler with total power over a country, typically one who has obtained control by force. Oliver Cromwell was an English general and statesman who, first as a subordinate and later as Commander-in-Chief, led armies of the Parliament of England against King Charles I during the English Civil War. He was often cruel and tyrannical and demanded selfless dedication and strict discipline from his soldiers. After defeating the king and his supporters in the second civil war, Oliver Cromwell decided to put King Charles I on trial for treason. He organized the trial and his army of soldiers prevented Members of Parliament who supported the king from going inside the courtroom. The only people allowed inside the courtroom were those who Cromwell thought supported the trial of the king. King Charles was condemned as a “Tyrant, Traitor, Murderer, and Public Enemy,” and executed. After the execution, the army made Cromwell the head of the nation and as Lord Protector, his government passed laws that reflected Cromwell’s Puritan views. There were harsh punishments for swearing, gambling, and drunkenness. Cromwell imposed extremely harsh policies on the Irish Catholic population. This was because of his deep religious antipathy to the Catholic religion. Scores of Irish Catholic men, women, and children died at the hands of Cromwell’s soldiers and he forcibly took away their land and gave it to English landowners. Oliver Cromwell used his absolute powers as Lord Protector and got rid of one Parliament and later dissolved a second one. He appointed eleven major generals to manage different areas of England and earned the reputation of being a dictator who ruled by force.
