Yet she also struggled with attempts to gain power through trying to have the upper hand over Proctor which contrasts with when she was powerless with Abby. Yet it was no use as Mary was used instead as a pawn for Proctor's agenda rather than Abby's. In the end, she lacked the courage and bravery to pursue what she sees as right and betrayed her values for the comfort of mass hysteria.
