Situationists practiced the derive in order to understand what was happening to the city and ultimately liberate us from everyday life. They were particularly concerned about the encroachment of capital on city spaces and the coercive power of the spectacle to manufacture desires which bind us into capitalist consumption.

Guy Debord’s ‘Guide psychogéographique de Paris […]’ is a détourned map of Paris in which Debord depicts a pyschogeographic guide to Paris through dérive.

Debord collages sections of a Paris map, isolating unified local areas and positioning them in relation to each other. This lithographic work uses orange/red arrows to indicate these relationships. The orange/red colour is also used in the graphic element across the right edge of the image, which establishes the piece as cartographic.

The work explores the relationship between local areas in Paris
