From July 1st to July 3rd is when the battle of Gettysburg took place. It’s considered one of the single most bloodiest battles of the war and numerous soldiers from both armies were missing, injured, captured, or killed. In late June 1863, General Robert E. Lee led his army of Northern Virginia to Pennsylvania after his victory over the Union at Chancellorsville. On the first day of the battle July 1st, the Confederates and the Union's army of the Potomac fought at the town of Gettysburg and the Union army took orders from General George G. Meade.

On July 2nd, the Federals were attacked heavily from the left and from the right by the Confederates. Lee commanded that Longstreet lead an attack on the Union left and Ewell’s corps should attack from the right, which was close to Culp’s hill. It was 4 p.m. when Longstreet's men first started firing on the Union corps which was commanded by Daniel Sickles. On each side of the armies both lossed more than 9,000 casualties. Over the past 2 days the total of people who died was close to 35,000.

On July 3rd Lee commanded his troops which was less than 15,000 to attack the Union’s center at Cemetery Ridge. This was called Pickett's Charge and the Confederates were able to penetrate the Union’s lines but they were unsuccessful due to too many rebel casualties. On July 4th Lee had to move out his army toward Virginia. This stopped the invasion of the North from Lee and the Union won in this major turning point.

The battle of Gettysburg was a major defeat for the Confederacy and in the battle the Union had 23,000 casualties while the Confederacy lost 28,000. This battle helped the Civil War favor the Union.
