Today i learned the versatile use of Maniok in the traditional ways. It was exciting to see the different ways it can be used and that there are no leftovers at all. It was also nice to see how they preserve the traditional way in preparing the kassav-food like their grandparents did years before. The do it with so much passion and love. So culture can also be expressed in the traditional foods by the people who make it. How exciting!

Eat where the locals eat

Today an old traveler wisdom has proven itself again: eat where the locals eat. In an old, traditional factory we learned how to prepare a delicious meal by using just a few ingredients and 100-year-old equipment. Thanks to its versatility, the manjok root is a central part of the Creole cuisine, seemingly just like music. Because without drum beats nothing really works in Guadeloupe. So the cooking class ended up becoming a drum session.

Today I learned how to make one of the local traditional dish in Guadaloupe - kassava. I knew about manihot but I never tried to make some food using it. It let me remember my childhood how I together with my grandma make flour from potatoes. It was similar.

The main that it was really simply way how to make food - kassava with banana and nut cream or with ham and cheese, or other.

Ancient latvians also sang songs whne they worked in fields or did some other works. Then hard works were easier to do. With the songs traditions have went Through centures. Important that we have people who try to keep old traditions. Traditional cuisines are very rich in tastes and aromas, and colourful like all other things here, in Guadaloupe.

It was amaizing experience!

Today we baked cassava. It was a great opportunity to return to the memories of my grandparents' home, where, as in the old Latvian tradition, they baked bread. And once again I made sure that the ancient traditions of many nations are similar, Latvians are also great singers and dancers. :)
