Not much is known about the courtship of ladybugs, but the males do secrete pheromones to attract females. Female ladybugs can lay 10 to 50 eggs in one patch, including some infertile ones. These eggs are here in case there are not enough aphids to feed the larvae when the fertile eggs hatch.

Ladybugs actually went into space! NASA scientists wanted to see how the aphids would escape from them in zero gravity, as normally the aphids fall from the stalk to evade the ladybugs.

The name ladybug came from a group of farmers in the Middle Ages. They prayed to the Virgin Mary (known to them as Our Lady) that their crops would be saved from pests. Ladybugs came in soon after and ate every single pest! So it was called Our Lady's Bird, which got shortened to ladybird, then known as ladybug.

Ladybugs release a harmful toxin when they feel threatened. The brighter the ladybug's color, the more toxic the chemicals.
