The name ladybug came from a group of farmers in the Middle Ages. They prayed to the Virgin Mary (known to them as Our Lady) that their crops would be saved from pests. Ladybugs came in soon after and ate every single pest! So it was called Our Lady's Bird, which got shortened to ladybird, then known as ladybug.

Ladybugs release a harmful toxin when they feel threatened.
