Celebrity Padlet by Alexander Sanders

Please respond to the prompt. Please put your name on the Padlet entry and respond in a paragraph.

Public scandals are America's favorite parlor sport. Learning about the flaws and misdeeds of the rich and famous seems to satisfy our egalitarian yearnings.

Egalitarian: the principle that all people are equal and deserve equal rights and opportunities.

Explain the quote in your own words. Do you agree with the quote’s commentary on the American public? Why or why not? Are celebrities more likely than other people to go through turmoil? Why have so many celebrities appeared “good” in the public eye, but have regressed to appear “evil” and victims of public scandal?

Yes, I agree with the statement. Many Americans are engrossed in the lives of those who appear to live in a much more comfortable manner than themselves. Due to this unwavering attention placed on the lives on the famous their every move is scrutinized thus making it easier for them to experience turmoil. Celebrities try to negate this by carefully curating their public appearance as well as through PR stunts which paint them in a favorable light.

I think sometimes this is true, but not always, since some fans look up to famous people and expect them to be perfect. Since celebrities are so well known and have such large amounts of attention, they are ridiculed when they do something a way someone doesn't like, and are more likely to go through turmoil. celebrities become very popular on the initial rise to fame, but seem to regress because the attention may get to their head and cause them to act more rude or selfish.

In other words, I can confidently say that public scandals bring satisfaction to people all over the world. Many celebrities appear to be perfect in the public eye because no one ever sees the ugly side of someone until they experience criticism which results in moral decay.

The quote is pointing out the fact that Americans enjoy to hear about scandals and misfortunes that celebrities are involved in because it makes them feel better about themselves. I do agree with this quote's commentary on the American public considering social media is constantly filled with articles, gossip, and stories about flaws of the rich and famous. People seem to get pleasure from seeing these celebrities fail because it puts them on a more equal level with average people. Many celebrities are glorified or envied for their seemingly easy lifestyle considering they have so much more money than most Americans. Pointing out their flaws make their lives not seem as amazing as they are made out to be, which makes the average person's life seem not as bad in comparison. I think that celebrities do not necessarily go through more turmoil than other people, but that they have to deal with a different type of turmoil that is associated with the pressure of always being watched. Also, I feel like it sometimes seems like they do just because the press and paparazzi's may exaggerate and publicize every single detail of their life, whether or not it is true. This would explain why a lot of celebrities seem "good" to the public, but then regress to be involved with scandal. They may try to keep their image as positive as they can, but eventually, the flawed side of them will be revealed.

Egalitarian is seeing everyone as equal and not giving anyone any unfair advantages. I agree that Americans can become invested in celebrity's lives and faults. Plenty of magazines and tv shows are already centered around celebrities as opposed to political figures or scientists. I think celebrity's faults are amplified because they are in the public eye, but not necessarily because of the flaws themselves. I think being famous could lead someone to go crazy over how scrutinized their actions are. The regression of celebrities is probably just a build up of the frustration they feel until they reach a breaking point.

Although most commentary on the American public is very general and stereotypical I usually agree with the quotes being stated. Some people get offended and disagree with the things said about the public but I believe that our society today is absolutely ridiculous enough to live up to the ridiculous things stated about it. Celebrities are more likely to go through turmoil because they live there lives under a spotlight, having all there privacy and personal life taken from them. This leaves them vulnerable to the public eye having everything about there lives exposed all the time.

The quote means that Americans like to see top celebrities and wealthy people do wrong. Partially because we are jealous and partially because it is not us getting put in that drama. The quote is correct. People love to see other people get in trouble or cause trouble. Celebrities are just as likely to go through turmoil as regular people. The only difference is that celebrities' issues are publicized more that regular people. Celebrities appear good because they often give us good music, tv shows, movies, and even do charity work. They appear evil in public scandals because we expect so much of them. To be perfect and a role model. Then, when they don't live up to that standard, we tend to criticize them heavily.

Egalitarian is viewing everyone as equal and not treating anyone unfairly. Hearing about drama gives something for people to do or talk about. I agree with the quote because all people look for is something to talk about and discuss with others to get attention. Celebrities are less likely to discuss things like this, unless they are huge events or topics, because more likely than not, they have gone through some of the similar issues. Some celebrities come off as "evil" because some of the things that are said can be very hostile and sometimes taken the wrong way. They appear good in the public eye because most of them can closely relate with certain issues.

People in America involve themselves in public scandals for entertainment and conscience relieving purposes. If famous people lie, cheat, and steal- it makes it seem less bad or less moral to the people who commit these acts. I do agree with the quote on the American public, this is because we have seen this exact thing in action so many times. OJ Simpsons scandal was one of the more memorable scandals that Americans invested their time and emotion in to. I do not think celebrities are more likely to go through turmoil than others, but I do think they have a better chance of getting caught. This is because they are constantly being watched and scrutinized, some people have jobs that solely focus on finding "dirt" on celebrities. Celebrities may seem good at first, but that may just be because the tabloids and paparazzi haven't

I do agree witht he commentary on the American public. People used scandals as entertainment, or a way to not focus on their own problems, and focus on other peoples problems. Celebrities are always being watched which can cause a large amount of stress. The more we watch them, the more we find out, and the more it can take a tole on them mentally. Britney Spears for instance couldn't handle the pressure of fame. We are also seeing peronal things from them that we woudn't see from the people around us, causing them to seem worse.

Celebrities have to go through paparazzi and people always trying to uncover things about their personal lives. They look good on camera and people look up to them but then there are journalists and paparazzi who try to bring them down or make them look like something they're not. showing that celebrities go through hardships help viewers realize that they go through hard times too, and that we are the same.

The quote is stating the fact that the public enjoys the scandals of people in the public eye. I agree with this commentary because celebrity's are all over the news on the daily, and stay on the news because of the interest from the viewers. Celebrities are easily more likely to go through turmoil just because of their status. It is easier to judge someone who puts themselves out into the public eye vs. someone who doesn't.

This quote explains how normal, everyday people are extremely interested in the faults and scandals of celebrities. It says that we enjoy knowing about their scandals because it shows that celebrities are real people too, and their lives are not perfect. This makes all of us egalitarian; which is the principle that all people are equal and deserve equal rights/opportunities. Celebrities are no more likely to go through turmoil than other people; however, when something bad does happen in their life, many people are going to know about it. Also, what is said about whatever turmoil that has happened might not even be true. Celebrities appear "good" in the public eye because they seem to live almost perfect lives and are very popular, therefore when a scandal does happen they are not seen as "evil", but we still always want to know about it.

The quote is saying that American's love to learn about celebrities' faults and misdeeds. We enjoy learning these things because celebrities are portrayed as a better than normal. They are the best of the best in talent, looks, or personality. Our egalitarian sides like hearing about their faults because it makes them seem less wonderful and more similar to ourselves. Celebrities with flaws are easier to relate to or to be used to make ourselves feel better in comparison. Most celebrities that are considered "good" tend to regress into scandal as the more infallible a person is the more someone wants to find a flaw.

The quote explains that people love to watch other people in turmoil, especially those that have a lot of money. People tend to hate on what they cannot have. I do agree with the quote and I definitely still think that celebrities are more likely to go through turmoil because of the majority of them lacking education. Using Allen Iverson as an example, he was insanely rich from his basketball career but had to file bankruptcy eventually because he has no common sense and was careless with his money. Many of them are considered evil because they do so well that people are jealous of them and search for any flaws they can but also they do get a bad reputation because they tend to still act like criminals.

The quote, "Public scandals are American's favorite parlor sport. Learning about the flaws and misdeeds of the rich and famous seems to satisfy our egalitarian yearnings," means that we as people of America love to see people fail and like to learn about how they did so. I do agree with this because we all like to see the misfortune and sadness happen when it hits the news, even I am guilty of doing this. Learning about when celebrity's mess up makes us wonder what is actually happening in that famous world. I think celebrity's are more likely to go through this because it gives them publicity from us. So many of them appear like their life is perfect but when they are falling off they get in trouble and that earns them publicity. They never come off as evil unless the media does so, when they have misdeeds they tend to either have it covered up or have support from us.

The quote is stating that the struggles and trials of America's favorites are influencing the drama in media. When there is tension between celebrities the audience (being us normal people) like to involve ourselves in the drama because we feed off of it. I agree with the quote because the audience continues to watch what will happen between the drama of the celebrities because it makes a bigger story line that everyone will want to follow. I feel like the drama that happens with celebrities is scripted at certain times. Like if a movie were to come out and the producers were worried about there not being a wide audience, then they would plot for a scandal to come out because then the audience would engage in every detail about the certain celebrities. Many of celebrities have admitted to this being the case at times. Some celebrities have appeared "good" in the public eye with scandals because they were made to seem like the victim. But the celebrities that have appeared "bad" in the public eye, were the antagonist in the situation.
