This quote is extremely critical to Miles and his sister Sarah. This shows miles that if you dedicate time and hard work it will pay off. He needed this confidence boost because a few pages before a big buck ran from him because of his dog. He was extremely angry and he lost all hope in feeding his sister over the winter. He wants to overcome his fear of "Buck Fever" because its getting in the way of feeding his sister.

Book Review from Booklist

Grades 7-10 Eleven years after Memory Boy (2001), Weaver presents the sequel. Miles, 16, Sarah, 13, and their parents have escaped the dangerous cities after volcanic eruptions trigger massive climate change and civilized behavior takes a backseat to survival. Now hiding in a cabin in the Minnesota woods, they have learned to live off the land, harvesting whatever they can to stay alive. The difficulty is school; while Miles is content with distance education through an alternative school, Sarah craves the contact of other teens and opts to attend the local public school. Her appearance prompts suspicion from local families, who view nonlocals as highly undesirable. She is forced to leave, but not before meeting her first boyfriend, the unusual and charming Ray. Alternating chapters focus on Sarah and Miles, as Sarah becomes a sharpshooter and practical Miles is seriously injured and no longer able to function as the family’s guardian. Although this tightly written and engrossing novel can stand alone, readers not already familiar with Memory Boy will likely seek out the earlier title. -- Carton, Debbie (Reviewed 02-15-2012) (Booklist, vol 108, number 12, p56)

This book review I feel is very accurate and gives the reader an idea of what the plot in this book is. I strongly agree with everything this person was saying about the book. It is a strong and very intense book that has a lot of life lessons. Miles needs to teach his sister how to hunt and quick because Miles is injured and they need food. If you are looking for a good survival book this is the perfect one, packed with action, life or death moments, and a lot more.

This image is a great representation of how Miles felt. He wanted to kill deer to feed his family but he had "Buck Fever" which is basically he either misses shots or he cant pull the trigger to kill the animal. He eventually kills a deer because he figured he needed to feed his family. Before he guts it and opens it up he payed his respects and thanked God for feeding his family and providing meals. Then he guts it right then and there. This photo is very respectful to the animal that he killed and it was saying it was either the guy or the deer survival of the fittest.
