If the lineal descendants of Ham are alone to be scriptural enslaved, it is certain that slavery in the south must soon become unscriptural; for thousands are ushered into the world, annually, who, like myself, owe existence to white fathers, and those most frequently their own masters" (Douglass 3).

Douglass discusses how the common way to make slavery seem like a good thing was to point to the bible and say it alright because the bible says so. When in all reality if american slaves are truly the children of Ham then they should no longer be enslaved because the blood line is so murky from all the white fathers that many slaves have. Douglass uses facts to show that the common argument holds no water and does nothing but proves why slavery is terrible.

Douglass was born into slavery, His mother was a slave and rumor was that his father was her master. This shows his credibility because he was born into slavery and wrote this book while still a slave. So he could accurately portray what is was like and the horror of each day.

Douglass uses emotions to refute yet another common fact on how slaves like being slaves. People from the north and south assume that because they are singing they are happy and love life but in all honesty, slaves sing most when they are sad, upset. People would know this if they were to listen to what they where saying in there songs. Douglass said go to the woods near the plantation and listen "Analyze the sounds that shall pass through the chambers of his soul"
