In this still, symmetry and colour are used to create an eery, almost robotic moment. Symmetrical shots in film are often used to show a sense of harmony with one's environment, and in wider media are meant to show beauty and perfection. To an audience, when faced with a moment of high tension only to cut to this character placed centre-screen, it gives us an eery insight to her cold and manipulative mindset. The use of colours white and blue also give it an almost surgical feel, foreshadowing what is to come– as well as amplifying her negative, cold traits.

This Dutch tilt draws emphasis on the characters beliefs and adds to how psychotic he is because everything is starting to become very clear and real as the questions the audience have been asking throughout the movie are now answered.
Additionally, the close-up adds to this uncomfortable tense moment because it brings us closer to the antagonist when the audience has been made to fully support the protagonist and are all desperate to get away from the family. Seeing the reflection of the surgery in the antagonists glasses makes the situation more real adding to the horror genre as the audience feels fear and panicked. Overall, this shot makes the audience feel more uncomfortable as the family’s racist beliefs have been brought to light and we know the full length of how serious the situation is making the antagonist a lot more evil than we originally thought in the beginning.

Mid shot, a bit of a low angle, everyone staring directly at the camera, pointing, smiling widely, almost surrounding the shot.
This shot is very intimidating, the low angle indicated the others looking down on Chris and there feels like there is no escape. They look at him like he is a person of interest there for their entertainment. The shot being directly through Chris's camera allows a sort of pov shot that puts the audience directly in his shoes, so they understand the discomfort he feels.
The location is isolating, forests are a classic trope in horror movies, having it as the backdrop creates a general sense of uneasiness for the audience.

This eye-level long shot of Rose positions her directly in the centre of the frame, emphasising her almost perfectly symmetrical surroundings. In combination with her stiff posture and deliberate movements, this portrays her as being calculated, precise and almost robotic, suggesting that she carefully and heartlessly planned how she would trap Chris long before they began dating. This encourages the audience to feel sympathy towards Chris as we realise that their relationship was not genuine and was but a game to Rose. Also, the shot slowly zooms out, creating tension, and the diegetic music we hear from her earphones is contrapuntal as a love song is out of place considering the brutality of the previous scene. This adds to the discomfort of the scene.

The close-up depicts the stuck feeling of Chris as he is put in a trance. He's framed right in the center with his arms out, getting cut off as they leave the frame as if they were tied. The closeness of the shot conveys to the spectator the utter panic Chris feels as he suddenly falls into the sunken place. The frame feels like the prison itself as he cannot move his body out of it, nor at all. It conveys how he is helpless against Missy, both her hypnosis and privilege.

The fact he is crying doubles down on how Chris is powerless as men, especially men of colour, are rarely shown crying. Being perceived as weak is shown as a negative trait, however, this shot turns that stereotype on its head. This view of Chris as he is almost forced to cry, highlights the cruelty of the Armitage family relatively early in the film. This is a severe jump to the audience from the slow tension that was building as Chris brushed off every other microaggression so far. In this scene, his consent to being hypnotised was taken away, and he cannot hold back the emotions he feels when he remembers his mother's death, he cannot hold his emotions back any longer. In this scene the Armitages win, they have broken him.

A long shot of Chris as he begins his decent into the “sunken place”. The placement of this image with Chris being the centre point exposes the vastness and darkness of the sunken place. It is almost comparable to being lost floating weightless in space with no one around to help you and nowhere to escape. The only light illuminating Chris is the light coming from above. One could see the sunken place as a way to show helplessness as Chris can only observe what he is doing and no matter how much he tries he’ll be stuck there and has no way of escaping. The image is also visually pleasing and stands out among the other great shots in the film. We only see this shot once and is quite brief. The feeling around this shot and the ones that follow do give the audience a sense of loneliness and unease which are similar emotions to what Chris is feeling at this time in the story. Being in an environment he feels uncomfortable in with no obvious way of escaping.

Due to the use of the close up and the sudden lack of emotion that is clearly visible, the audience, as well as the character, feel a sense of panic and no escape. We as the audience are put in a fight-or-flight position as the realisation of what has to be done for the protagonist to escape clicks in as fast as the characters switch of emotion.

This medium shot is used so we as an audience can see every person in shot with their outfits and body language but also their expression. It also can be considered a subjective POV shot from the protagonist, Chris’ eyeline. This creates an unnerving feeling to the audience as without context their smiling facial expressions, fancy clothing and open body language can be seen as warm and inviting, however due to their strange behaviour, for example pointing out advantages Chris has over them due to him being black in the scenes shown before this shot, we instead get an unsettling and eerie feeling. We also as an audience at this point do not know their motivations behind their actions and comments which also makes this sight very enigmatic.

This still in particular is definitely my favourite in the whole film, in fact , this scene is so iconic that I have seen it multiple times even before having watched the film. The composition in this still/scene is well done because it utilises a closeup shot which helps the viewer focus on the character and their emotions, you really get a sense of dread and sadness when looking at the still. Its also very symmetrical which I think personally adds to the sleekness of the still. I also like how the background is out of focus leaving the viewer with only the character to focus on.

Having the camera point down onto the camera shows how weak and helpless the character is in the moment. You can see the emotion on Chris' face too, shocked and terrified.
