Written in 1952 by Alberto Ríos, "The Border: A Double Sonnet" relates the border to different objects that communicate dislike for these man-made barriers that divide us. I thought it was appropriate because in CSI we have discussed the fears rooted stereotypes that isolate people from each other. With the current administration it is increasingly hard for many families to be together this holiday season, but I hope that everyone can.

To answer question 1 I put two people holding hands, one labeled "able" and the other "disabled". I drew that to show that I hope that we can come to a place where all marginalized people are accepted so that we can all join hands in equality. For 2 I drew symbols for the words acceptance, hope and representation. I hope that this holiday season we can see more of these three things for all disabled people and well as during the rest of the year. Lastly I drew the black power symbol with the words rise up. I think that we can all advocate for justice by demanding better treatment for the marginalized and by not letting small micro aggressions slide. This year in CSI i have really been inspired by the theme of standing up. Its so easy, especially as a teenager, to let others take the reign but this class has pushed all of us not to be complacent or compliant and has given us the tools not to be.hole punch it at the top of the head

My ornament focuses on the image of a paperclip as the center of a blooming flower. The reason I focused on a paperclip is because, as we have discussed in class, our society teaches us to view disability (mental or physical) as a setback rather than as an asset in one's life. The paperclip signifies the flexibility and adaptability of disabled persons to overcome their personal struggles and escape the constraints placed on them. They have as much as ability as anyone else to succeed in the face of opposition.

In response to second question, I used the quote by Paulo Coelho "One is loved because one is loved. No reason is needed for loving. I used this quote to show what values should be lived out in our local and national community this holiday (and further into the future). Those who are marginalized for their disabilities shouldn't be denied any value such as the ones before; Love, Respect, Integrity and Compassion. There is no reason why people should be misjudged or treated unfairly. Our country was built on these values, and we should equalize between the two perspectives. As I began to learn more within the Disabilities unit, I decided to incorporate these values even more with my family, especially my older cousin, whom is physically disabled (half-blind). Fortunately he has a loving family that provided his resources to help him, however, it's frustrating to see that there are still many people that aren't given those resources, and most of all, love and support.

CSI has really opened my eyes to the vast number/depth of issues in the country, but has also provided me with hope and tools to make change.

In response to the third question, I used the quote "I'm no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept" I used this quote to represent what justice advocates should do in their daily lives. I thought this quote was fitting because it shows that we should not sit idly by while there are injustices in the world. We cannot stay silent while people are having their rights taken away from them. Rather, we must stand up and do what we can to change these things whether it be protests, talking to state representatives, or having our voices heard. As we begin our disability unit, I believe that all of us should be active global citizens in helping those who are ignored have their voices heard. We should also be cognizant of the diction we use and the diction of others, not accepting our friends and family using these hurtful words but standing up.

To respond to the third question I picked the poem, "Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today, I am wise so I am changing myself." by Rumi. I chose this poem in particular to answer the prompt, because I felt it showcased the importance of acknowledging our own flaws before trying to change others. If we judge others and act as advocates for an issue we ourselves do not actively stand by, what makes us such legitimate candidates to advocate for that change? Social justice advocates should be role models for their community - demonstrating actions others are inspired and motivated by. They are not there to patronize or undermine the work and lives of others, but rather instill hope and kindly encourage a change that can benefit something bigger than ourselves.

Sometimes, it is hard just to exist in this world when you feel discriminated against and alone, and I want everyone this Holiday season- especially those who are marginalized- to know that they are special and loved for being themselves. I got this quote from a piece I wrote a couple years ago that talked about how people themselves are miracles because evolution could have happened infinite other ways, but the product instead was us; we could have been born almost an infinite amount of different ways with different combinations of DNA, yet it is our individual beings that exist. And that, in of itself, is a miracle.

I addressed the first and second question using a quote because I know it can be especially hard for those who are less fortunate during the holiday season. It is always nice for our community to reach out and be there for those who are marginalized and don't have the same opportunities as some of us. Very simple things such as a nice gesture or a small gift can make someones day and I hope to do this in my community.

I responded to the second question using a quote from Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech in the piece titled "A Revolution of Values". The holiday season should be a time of thinking about others, yet corporations take advantage of these feelings of generosity to commercialize products. As a result, people become more obsessed with materialism than they should, and this quote by MLK really embodies bringing people back to the values behind the holiday season. Also, the quote talks about focusing on people, and I think that we should consider everyone during the holidays and recognize that not everyone is getting a present due to socioeconomic status. We should use this knowledge to reach out and help others, not only during the holidays but all the time.

I responded to the first question by drawing chains on the figure's arms representing the restraint that society places on minorities and my wish is for them to break those restraints, which is why I show the chains to be broken. In addition, there is a fist representing power because I want minorities to gain power and be confident in their abilities. Lastly, I wish minorities would utilize the amazing thoughts and ideas that they have which is why I drew a brain as part of a lightbulb. I wish people who are marginalized could break the barrier between them and society and show their growth and abilities as valuable members of society.
