Leadenhall market is still a foodies haven, and the current covered market structure is a MUCH later, Victorian and 20th century edifice. But Leadenhall has its roots in the fourteenth century, and indeed earlier (as it stands on the site of the forum of Roman Londinium). It developed as the City's main market for meat, poultry and eggs, with subsidiary specialisms in greengrocery and cutlery. After the Great Fire, it was reconstructed as a covered market, with specialised sectors for 'herbs', greengrocery and meat. The current building dates mostly from 1881, and might be most familiar to you as the setting for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter films....
For more of its early modern history, see The Map of Early Modern London (accessed 8 December 2022).
