“Formal learning environments require an upgrade to reflect the 21st-century practices taking place within them” (Horizon 2017).

Our world has seen a massive shift in industry in the last two decades. Many believe that we are in a change so massive that the term Industry 4.0 or the 4th Industrial Revolution has begun. As technology has increased so has the industry that we now live in. Below you will find an infographic detailing the aspects of Industry 4.0. (i-scoop).

Our workforce has been drastically affected by Industry 4.0. As our world shifts to meet the needs of this new industry we need to be preparing students to enter the workforce as prepared as possible. One way we could begin this shift is by rethinking how we design classroom spaces.

There have been many studies done that show students work better in spaces they feel comfortable in and safe in. Creative classrooms have a significant impact on student learning outcomes (Manno, 2016). If students have a significantly better chance of learning more efficiently in creative spaces, this could shift the pedagogical practices of education forever.

Controversy

The idea behind redesigning classrooms can be seen as controversial for many reasons. First, we need to recognize that these spaces should reflect the 21st century thinking we are currently asking our students to participate in. How can we expect students to be innovative thinkers when we create such a structured learning environment with hardly any personalization.

Teachers also like to be in charge and the leaders of the room. Which is definitely a good thing, but sometimes there can be negative consequences of that mindset. Those that have that mindset can get caught up in the old school way of teaching where the teacher stands in front of the classroom and lectures for 20-30 minutes while the students quietly listen and take notes over the information. This is very outdated. Kevin Ryan states in the article 5 Big Takeaways from Redesigning Learning Spaces, “classrooms are set up so that there really is no front-of-the-classroom.” The idea is that all spaces of the classroom should be working spaces.

Pros of Redesigning Learning Spaces

There are so many pros of redesigning learning spaces.

When redesigning learning spaces it is important to remember who the clientele is. In classrooms that is typically students and teachers.
From an intrinsic perspective, when a school district takes the time, energy, and funds to redesign classrooms to better serve students and staff members, then the message being portrayed is that "you matter" (Lange, 2016). This can drastically change the motivation behind students and staff members. If the environment they are being expected to work in is sending a positive message there is a higher chance that more will be accomplished.
Another pro to redesigning learning spaces is that necessity of newer and updated furniture that is flexible, comfortable, and moveable. Many times we see that with the change in furniture and design, personalization for student needs can take place (Lange, 2016). If we can personalize the learning experience we have a better chance of meeting the needs of ALL students.

Looking into the research behind Redesigning Learning Spaces, I actually had a difficult time uncovering "cons" on this topic. Overall, there are endless positives to redesigning learning spaces. School districts are seeing the shift in education and most are beginning to make the necessary changes.

What schools have done to Redesign Learning Spaces

Many schools have already made the shift to redesign their learning spaces. What I have seen in my research that I love about this concept, is that it is not a one size fits all. There are so many ways to personalize the design process in classrooms. One key design element that architects are beginning to implement in their design of learning spaces is daylight. Adding lots of windows to allow natural light in the classroom can have a huge positive impact on the atmosphere of the classroom (Lange, 2016).
Overall, the design process of the 21st century classroom should include flexible seating, soft seating/comfort, moveable walls, and an increase in technology usage.
