In the traditional sense, ugly is used to describe someone who isn't pretty based on societal standards, but in her essay Kincaid uses it more as a representation of being disrespectful towards a certain culture as a tourist or being sort of unaware of your differences. It can make the reader feel like she is talking to directly to them and make it more 'attacking' towards the audience.

Kincaid uses the word "ugly" about ten times throughout her piece, frequently directing it towards the reader. This constant drilling of the word into the reader's mind almost causes it to lose its meaning. Rather than meaning unattractive or gross, it is just hateful. Kincaid is not directly calling YOU unattractive, but rather stating her, and the natives hatred for you.
